Taco Charlton

Any time a player is a first-round pick in Dallas, the expectations are always going to be a little higher among the fanbase.

In the case of 2017 first-round pick Taco Charlton, many are expecting him to come in and "fix" the Cowboys' pass rush or at least become the team's best edge rusher as a rookie. That is not fair to him nor the Cowboys. So what is fair and what should we expect from the 6'6", 270-pound pass rusher from Michigan?

Not as much as you would think.

However, it is fair to expect that Charlton will start in Week 1. Every single Cowboys' first-round pick from 2010 to 2016 has started on opening day for the team. But what position Charlton will start at is another story....

No offense to whoever wrote that...but I have yet to see anyone on this forum say that they expect Taco to fix the cowboys pass rush...if anything I think the best I have seen say that if he gets 6-8 Sacks it would be a good thing.

Now if we had the first pick and we took M.Garrett...you might have some or a bunch of people saying that...don't recall seeing many let alone any say they expect Taco to come in and "FIX" the cowboys pass rush.

i watched Taco college film...and he has slow first step and if it not for his long arms i dont think he would get many sacks....until he gets experience he will get washed out on plays by stronger faster NFL lineman...just my humble opinion

Taco has spent this off season getting ready for a draft, going through all the media hype of being a #1 draft pick of the Cowboys, and then being humbled by getting his hat handed to him by Tyron Smith during OTAs. Who is setting expectations too high? Taco is not the saving grace of the rookie class but that doesn't mean either are on the road to being a bust. Just like last year, I like this rookie class but my expectations are right where they need to be... wait and see. Let's hope this team helps one another get better rather than letting the competition tear them apart. If teamwork can be made the theme of this team and they gel as one then anything is possible.

I think at the WORST our secondary will be the same as last year, meaning 2018-19 season they should be pretty damn good. Im expecting the secondary to be a little better this year though.

Switzer is gonna be awesome.

I think I've made it known I hate the Taco pick

Yep, and there are plenty on here where the expectations for Taco arent "a little higher".

We know very little about the guys that got drafted other than some had good college careers. And to say the bottom is 4 and 7 years vets playing the best year they ever had? I highly doubt that. Its more realistic to say the ceiling is how the secondary played last year. It would be a miracle if the secondary play was better.

Anthony Brown was a 6th rounder and he was good. I'm having faith in Mcclay

:hammer: Most people are just praying he stays healthy and "drug-test negative" through training camp.

My expectations for Taco are mainly that he'll be solid vs. the run and get mostly hurries and a few sacks his rookie year.

Anything that occurs over and above that, I will likely consider as gravy. Rookie DEs just take time to develop.

As he gains experience and develops through weight training, more sacks will come. Baby steps.

These guys all seem to be LDE's on the roster. I have yet to see a guy that can be a legitimate war daddy RDE.

He managed 10 1/2 sacks his last year in college, so he's not without at least some talent for the rush. He might get only a few sacks during his rookie season, although he'll gain strength and better technique with strength training and technical development after that.

If he's able to get anywhere from 5 to 7 sacks or more in year two, I wouldn't complain. His main strength should rightly be vs. the run with an occasional sack. If we get several with such capabilities, the cumulative effect could possibly be substantial.

Agreed, there is a huge jump from collegiate levels to professional. He is a dedicated worker, and did succeed against observable talents, even if at the collegiate level. He'll grow in Dallas...no doubt.

Yeah, I think it's understandable that would happen when we draft too late with regularity. If we manage to get several DEs with middling sack abilities, the end result could be substantially encouraging. I'm not banking on getting any war daddies anytime soon. They tend to disappear much too early in the draft more often than not. I'm hoping Maliek comes on this year and stays healthy from now on as well. It's a struggle getting "rushmen."

This is what I have said all along. We have all LDE. And Tacos film to me shows his best plays were on the left side in COLLEGE. Hard to imagine him becoming a RDE right away if ever. His body type and athletic traits seems more suited to the LDE role.
