Bradie James hit the nail on the head. We don't play rookies

Bradie James said it on his show yesterday. Unless you're amazing, you're not going to get much playing time as a rookie on this team.

I don't know if its Phillips, our level of talent, or just our culture. But you don't see rookies playing much unless they have to on this team.

Even sophomores and junior year players are going to have somewhat of a limited role.

We want more out of Martellus Bennett, but there is a good chance that wont happen this year. Same thing for Felix Jones.

This team plays veterans...

Bobby Carpenter, Miles Austin are both "seniors". And they are JUST cracking into lineups. Carpenter being a starter in the nickel. Austin only became a starter because of an injury.

The only players really thrust into it have been Jenkins and Scandrick. And they've been called sophomore sensations.

In fact its surprising how many players we have under 3 years experience.

Choice
Jones
Ogletree
Bennett
Phillips
Brewster (injured)
Johnson
B. Williams
Butler
Hodge
Ocatvien
J. Williams
Ball
Jenkins
Scandrick
Hamlin
Buehler

You see which players are playing specific roles, which ones have growing roles, and which are simply waiting for time.

But even if you look at the 4-5 year players, most of them have only been starting for a couple years.

Wade explained how he looked at it in his PC. He said there were several guys he wanted to see play and that he was excited about, but due to the 45 man limit and because it means you are taking a guys spot who is already playing (like Crayton for example) you tend to work the guys in slowly.
You don't take a guy like Ken Hamlin out playing a pass-happy team to give Mike Hamlin time even though you are excited to see him play and know he has the potential because ultimately you are taking time from your proven player. (Though Ken does happen to be injured atm coincidently)
Same with V and Spears. Spears doesn't have the sacks but he does get pressure and he definitely is strong vs run. Taking him out is not without risk so you play V sparingly till he proves himself.

V was active for almost every game if not every game... he's on special teams! Nice excuse but Wade coaches like he is back in Houston with his Daddy.

The flip-side to this is sometimes a rookie is thrown into the fire because there are no alternatives and sometimes those rookies become the next star, sometimes it crushes their confidence and hurts the team. (Vince Young, Matt Leinart for example)
Dallas isn't in a position (thankfully) were they have to resort to that. And that's great.

It's not an excuse lol. BWill and V got DESTROYED by 2nd and 3rd teamers against the run. I mean blown out, turned completely around destroyed. They made Carpenter look like Dat.
Sometimes it takes time and there's no rush so....?

Sorry not JWill, BWill. :eek::

We've been very lucky on the injury front. That has allowed the team to break in promising rookies slowly, rahter than forcing them to the wolves.

When you start having mutliple long term injuries, like the Commanders for example, you would find that rookies would have much more playing time, for better or worse.

Hopefully, our good luck with injuries contonues all year and the team can keep spot playing guys like Ogletree, Butler and others.

I just know that if Andy Reid had Jones, Bennett and Choice, he would be shoving them down our throat.

In a league where you have to evaluate players quickly to see if you want to keep them or let them go FA, you need to be willing to play rookies. Plain and simple.

They play rookies.. it's a very simple philosophy.

If Jones took 20 carries - he'd probably fumble a few times. If Jones was left to pass block the entire game - Romo would probably be hurt by the 3rd quarter.

Listen, there's SOME things rookies excel at - there's A LOT more that they're horrible at. It's the nature of college football.. they play in one system their whole college career. In college, they didn't have to protect the QB. In college, they didn't have to carry it 25 times and be hit by 11 college "all-stars" the entire game. In college, they didn't have to identify that player, this player, and where the blitz pickup is. In college, every play wasn't a chess match. In the NFL - EVERY play is a chess match.

I think the way the Cowboys do it is great; put those guys in the game for what they're good for. Don't put a player in a situation where he is more than likely going to fail. Barber wasn't great at blitz pickup his rookie year. Romo wasn't good at reading the blitz pickup his rookie year. With years of coaching - watching film - and practice - they "get it".

When they "get it" - they play full time. Everyone on this team is an athlete - do they have "it" is the question.

Bradie was actually implying that it's tough for rookies to earn playing time because the veterans on the team are so good. It was a compliment to Ogletree for earning snaps.

Did you come out of that game thinking Celek, Mccoy, Deseas and Maclin were being shoved down our throat? If so, maybe that's why the Cowboys dominated the game because those young guys did nothing.

Absolutely.

I hate to use the Red Sox as just one of many examples. But they started Jacoby Ellsbury and he helped win the WS.

Veteran football players make mistakes. Rookies should be allowed to play and make those same mistakes ;)

I think guys are taking this the wrong way. Or maybe I am since I didn't hear the interview. I think Bradie is actually complimenting the rookies because we've had young guys get play. Especially Scandrick, Felix and Mike Jenkins. Even Bennett has gotten a lot of time on the field.

Vets make few mistakes this is not pre-season football these games count and it is not baseball when a rookie screws up and is lost on the field it affects the entire unit. Wade has put young guys in spot duty in situations he feels they can handle. As players grow and develop and earn trust they will see their time increase.

This is a good thing. We have good players that are really talented. When you have a lot of young guys playing it's a very inconsistent team.

True, teams who are playing a bunch of rookies and 2nd year guys normally are not winning a lot of games as mistakes are all to common for young players. Dallas has some very talented vets and the ability to put young guys in certain situations normally situations the coaches feel they can handle.
