I dont think James knew he caught the ball.

I agree, and he did lay a heck of a hit on the guy, so I can see a little excess adrenaline pumping...

I've been pretty disappointed in his play so far in the preseason but I'll wait until the regular season with a whole game schemed before I get overly critical or overly excited about any defensive player.

Both James and Ayodele seem to have trouble clearing the clutter getting to their gap assignments. James seems particularly slow in recognition but that may be just his adjustment to new responsibilities combined with the passive nature of preseason defensive calls.

That's fine. Celebrate when you actually stop the offense, not after they got a first down (or close to it).
Sorry Rack, unless you are talking about a completely different play, Theo is right on this one.

How about the play Bradie James made against a Texans where he had a tackle for a six-yard loss on a running play. He met the RB deep in the backfield. Overall, I think James is playing much better this preseason than he did last year. What does everyone else think?

Do you think this defensive scheme is better suited to James abilities?

So far James looks a lot better than last year and he seems quicker and slimmer, hope he keeps it up but it's only pre-season so we shall see soon enough..

The RT came down inside because Spears shot that gap. He was only doing his job -- blocking Spears. That's simply an advantage of the 1-gap system. You can dictate what the offensive line does, which makes these sorts of blitzes actually work.

No, he wasn't. He didn't block anyone on the play.

But anywho, I don't think any of their linemen screwed up.

The RT screwed up. Since Spears shot inside, the RG had him, and the RT should of picked up James.

I think it's pretty obvious the RT screwed up.

That's good. But it still isn't rationalization for celebrating that you just allowed a 9 yard completion. (Not James, but the team). I think Roy was giving him the kill sign at the end...."he caught the ball, dude"

Exactly.

I guess there's a thin line between being a vocal, hard-hitting leader and being a tool for celebrating too much. I'm often confused as to why either is necessary.

I have no problem with them celebrating, but do it when you actually do a good PLAY, not just a big hit. If he had dropped the ball, I'd be all for the celebration.

I had no problem with the celebration after the hit on the RB.

Sorry Rack, unless you are talking about a completely different play, Theo is right on this one.

What? The RT screwed up. No, theo isn't right. I said an offensive lineman missed his assignment and by golly... An offensive lineman missed his assignment. The only thing I was wrong about was WHICH offensive lineman it was.

:hammer:

Also, I wonder how long will the fans here continue to minimize James improvement? Perhaps when he makes the probowl this year the skeptics will run and hide. Quite simply it was a very good play, which was based solely on a great pre-snap read.

What?!@

I think even theo would agree that a "pre snap read" had nothing to do with it. We ran a stunt (DE went inside, James went outside) and it worked. He was gonna do that stunt regardless, it had nothing to do with a presnap read.

The RG blocked down to the NT. That was presumably his responsibility. Only after the RG recognized that the NT was shooting the gap between the OC and the LG did he turn and block Spears. By then the RT was already blocking Spears.

I think it's pretty obvious the RT screwed up.
No, it's blatantly obvious that the RT was doing exactly as he was assigned. There are two explanations: (1) both the RT and RG screwed up, or (2) both the RT and RG blocked as assigned. It doesn't make sense for the RG to be assigned to block inside to the NT (as he did when the ball was snapped) and the RT to be assigned to block outside, leaving the LDE with no blockers.

That's not a stunt. Bradie was stacked behind Spears. Spears shot the gap to the right and Bradie shot the gap to the left. That's just pure and simple 1-gap assignment. There was no stunting involved.

You might could blame the FB, who ran right past Bradie James, lol.

No, he didn't. There was a better replay during the telecast, a close up of the play. The RT TRIED to block spears, but ended up blocking no one and James ran right by.

The RT didn't block spears.

Unless I'm getting confused and remembered seeing the RG block no one, but I remember spears running right by the guy that blocked no one, and that was the RT.

Wish someone had the close up version of that play.

If his assignment was to do nothing, then yeah, it's obvious.

Actually when a DL and ILB are involved it's referred to as a "Game". At least it was when I played LB at Midwestern.

Basically the DE and ILB switched responsibilites, but James was shooting that gap regardless, a presnap read had nothing to do with it.

RT or RG, the point is that the play was schemed for someone to come totally free and that's what happened. So it wasn't Bradie making a great play that other players couldn't have made; it was just sort of his turn on that play.

Kind of like later when Burnett came completely free for a sack. The play hardly took special talent.

I'm with Rack on the celebrating, and it's another reason James doesn't seem that bright to me. Sure, on a TFL in a critical sitaution, get pumped up all you like. But when the guy catches it for a first down, we really don't care how hard you hit him. They still "won" that play.

Obviously there's a ton to be determined about this team, so we'll see how it goes. But I can see us using a first-day pick on a ILB next year, because I don't think any of our guys are that well rounded there. (Burnett might could be if he weren't hurt 24/7.)

That's true. He was running directly to the hole he was supposed to hit, and never bothered to even look at Bradie, even though Bradie was in there so fast he could have tackled the FB if he wanted to.

Rack, you can click on the link and watch the play. It's okay to just admit that you were wrong.

The link shows the close up play that you're referring to. If you had actually watched the link, you'd know that. Then again, if you had actually watched the link, you'd have stopped arguing by now.

If the RT was "doing his job" by "blocking spears" then why does he turn away from Spears and reach for James as he's running by him?

I'll tell you why, cuz he screwed up.

It's pretty basic, Theo. Even you should be able to figure it out. Maybe.

Edit: It appears the RT and RG both screwed up. But for sure the RT screwed up. You can see him try and get James, but it was too late.
