I never said it would lead us to the promised land. But now we have someone smart enough running the offense to know that if your running back is averaging 5, 6 yards a clip... don't call pass plays on 2nd, 3rd, and or 4th and 1 or goal to go.
We now have an offensive coordinator who has an high enough football IQ to call plays according to the flow of the game. Kellen Moore was too dumb to do these things and make the correct in-game adjustments.
Kellen Moore in my opinion is a solid junior college offensive coordinator at best. I'm extremely glad he's gone. He has weak *** play designs as well. How many times have our opponent's players say that they knew what we were doing in certain situations?
Nuff said....
Kellen Moore isn’t dumb. He just lacks experience. When I was young, I was super confident in my abilities, and rightly so. But time and experience have made me BOTH less confident, and also better at what I do.
Moore calls a good game. He just needs the experience to take the edge off of his confidence. He Will ironically become an even better play caller when that happens. But he’s already pretty good.
McCarthy has the experience. He may not be as smart as Moore, or as inventive. Lombardi wasn’t as smart as Landry, as admitted it publicly. But Lombardi also said he knew how to exploit Landry’s genius, and beat him twice in a row leading up to Super Bowls 1 & 2.
Landry eventually won, and his genius transformed the game on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. Landry invented the 4-3 defense, and the Flex defense, which was a precursor to the 3-4 defense. He also invented the spread offense, and was among the first to incorporate pre-snap motion into his offensive plays. At a time when QB’s called the plays on the field, Landry was the first head coach to call the plays regularly from the sideline. But all that genius still didn’t beat Lombardi in the 1966 and 1967 NFL championship games.
Moore’s time will come. He’s super smart and innovative. It doesn’t mean that McCarthy can’t beat him or call a more effective game in a championship situation. Personally, I believe the Cowboys offense will take a step back in yardage and points scored. But they may end up winning more games anyway.
As Head Coach, McCarthy is responsible for the whole team, not just the offense. He rightly was frustrated that at key moments, Moore thought only of the offense, and not the risk to the defense if his play call didn’t work. McCarthy can call a more conservative offense, based on his experience, with less offensive production, but as long as the team wins, he wins.
You might think that McCarthy would have been more insistent on getting flashy players for offense in last month’s draft. But experience has taught him to count on more substance than flash. This you get Mazi in round 1 to fill the gaping hole in the middle of the defense, Overshown in the 3rd to allow the Cowboys to transition Micah to full time DE, and Schoonmaker in the 2nd to fill the Y tightens role that is necessary for the offense he wants to call. Meat and potatoes picks, not flashy picks. That is the effect of experience. Will it work? Who knows? But Kellen Moore can be brilliant, and it still be a good choice for this team to have McCarthy call the plays. Let’s hope his experience trumps Moore’s genius in the short term. Time will tell.
