Break the bank for Mario Williams?

we have 17.5 in flexible dead cap money, 4 mill to dump newman. 4-5 between brady james and brooking. we can also get 8 mill by turning scandrick and ratts guarenteed mony into signing bonus money and the 1.5 mil from the cba. Not including if the cap goes up. ( numbers stolen from adamjjt :)) Next year we have no dead cap money so you could push dollars into the second year of the contracts. I understand the logic in we have to many holes to fill but a bunch of guys doesnt win superbowls, playmakers do. We may go to a 4-3, we play allot of that now. how about being able to switch defense without have to swap players and be equally effective. Mario brings that. On the other side of the ball, Nicks gives you a 6'5 330lbs strongside guard who is 26 a 2 time probowler while giving up 2 sacks last year. We have not had a strong side since larry allen was here. When you need a yard 9 out of 10 times you get it. we can afford 2 bigtime contracts and Jerry has said over and over he is spending all his cap money. We may be able to grab both and a 2nd tier corner and go into the draft without any glaring needs. To pull that off and land konz at center would make my day.

Man, just give me Nicks and Williams and I will be contented with free agency (provided we sign our own, Robinson and Fiametta ... and Elam in that case).

We could look for a couple of low-cost FAs as well, or just address the secondary and other interior line spots in the draft.

I could live with this scenario. :D

If only we had a DC who could get that kind of production out of nondescript second round picks like that instead of having to pay a fortune for studs in FA...

That said, if you asked 32 GMs whether they'd rather have a great passrusher or a great guard, it would be a landslide. And not for the guard.

I literally LOL. The fact that you had to clarify that is insanely funny.

If I felt Dallas was one player away like when Dallas was close during 90's and then went after Haley...then you go after Mario with everything you have. But this current teams needs to upgrade about 5-10 positions before they can ever start uttering the words contenders. Pass on Mario. They need a 2nd tier player not named Anthony Spencer. Somebody who will take advantage of playing opposite of Ware but allows cap flexibility to numerous other needs.

What you are projecting as a need for pass rush, usually raises it's head in the draft in the top ten picture each year. When you expecting Dallas to be up there to grab one? Otherwise you get a true force when one real force some how reaches free agency. If you don't get him there, then how many more years do you wait to get a shot at another?

Mario Williams is a bona fide candidate for just that. They don't grow on trees to non-top ten selectors in the draft as well.

You either grab him, or merely get pass rushing upgrade to Anthony Spencer. The only apparent candidates even here, are Cliff Avril of the Lions, Robert Mathis of the Colts, and perhaps Jeremy Mincey of Jacksonville. But even here, you have to weigh a possible trade off in effectiveness against the run which Spencer already has strength in.

There isn't much window for change, outside of Mario Williams. But there is room for alternatives...there.

there are no great pass rushers available this year. Mario is a VERY GOOD pass rusher; almost certainly better then what is available in the draft this year. Those talking about Ingram and company, I see none of them likely to be better then Mario, or even as good.

Now there is a guard named DeCastro that COULD be great.
And Nicks is a guard who RIGHT NOW is a candidate to be called great.

So do we want the best we can get? Or just better then we have?

A great line can be attained with three great players on it. Either Nicks or DeCastro could be one.

But adding Mario Williams to that of Jay Raliff and DeMarcus Ware, would make the Dallas rush there as well. Without it, then Dallas returns to having problems to shutting down any team lead by at least an Eli Manning to 21 points come Decemer or the playoffs.

With Mario Williams, and with either Nicks or DeCastro...then Dallas still projects at being able to produce above that 21 point transition line. The dynamics line of change would be merely ten sacks on the non-Ware side. In just five games before his injury and in a similar role, Mario already had five sacks. No, that would pair with Ware as being fully elite.

It would be a smart move but JJ could care less he more interested in big truck shows and high school games at the palace.

Mario Williams wants $18 Million a year, not a cent less - according to Houston radio.

Washington paid that money out to a defensive tackle, and then changed their style of defense without asking him. Think after experiencing and excelling for a short period in it, he would come blindly into Dallas without owning up to at least contribute as he did his entire early time in the NFL? I don't.

I am curious as to whether the NFL will allow non-QB salaries to approach the NBA and MLB deathlines of $20 M salary points...of course his free agent is telling him by all means to jump.

what he wants and what he gets will be two VERY different things

This year Nmadi was hyped up the yang about what he could get and had to settle for quite a bit less.

I think Mario would be incredibly lucky if he got $15 million a year. And only Danny Boy would pay that.

I could see $12 million or so a year. IF Danny Boy keeps his wallet at home.

Now there is a possibility a couple of the teams like KC and Tampa who have HUGE bucks that HAVE to be spent MIGHT go fairly high.

But there ain't no way he will get $18 million a year.

The only one who will get that kind of money is Brees.

burma, I hope you're right here...as Jerry could then be well into the mix.

Calais Campbell is the guy I really want. He could make our D line fearsome again. But there is no way Zona lets him go.

After him the best bet in either FA or the Draft is Mario.

If we really want to upgrade the pass rush seriously I do not see a better solution then Mario Williams that we can realistically hope to get.

Mario from one side and Ware from the other; or better yet have Rat at DE and Ware at OLB on one side and Hatcher at DE and Mario at OLB on the other side. Then on passing downs Mario and Ware at DE and Rat and Hatcher at DT.

Mario from one side, Ware from the other ...

... QB dumps off a short pass to the FB, and he's off to the races.

Didn't we go through this nightmare already?

Mario's not the solution.

not even close. We have never had anyone to really help out Ware.

Now of course this also means that we have better coverage ILBs then we have had. But with Lee and HOPEFULLY carter that problem should be taken care of.

And you really think dumping off is that easy with a real pass rush coming?

ONE: the QB still needs a little time
TWO: He has to spot the RB in time to get him the ball
THREE: the RB has to have a full step on the LB or it could very well be a pic six

You're assuming we'd still run a 3-4 if we signed Mario.

I've never thought we needed to switch to a 4-3, and I don't think there's much chance Mario is a Cowboy, but he would absolutely make this defense better.

Bringing in Mario would turn our D into a 5-2.
