Break this film down for this play - who blew the coverage?

Someone did. We don't have enough information to decide who. Either the LB or SS could have had responsibility for that middle zone or the slot receiver on that play. It looks bad for Heath because the LB bit hard into the play fake which means he was closing fast on the RB.

I think I agree with the others that its a good play design and worked. I sorta wonder how it would have played out with Lee on the field.

It's simple man coverage with a slot blitz. The Mike LB would NEVER be asked to cover the slot receiver man to man across the field, you can tell this just by presnap alignment. He is keying the RB, thats his man. Heath bit on the run fake and lost his man completely.

This is a standard cover 2 deep with one safety cheating up (Heath). You have man coverage on the outside and SL. There are 4 DL and 2 LBs in this 'base' cover package we play in well over 50% of the time.

The Mike misreads the play and follows the RB into the flats when he has responsibility to drop deep. He has to take that crossing route. By offensive design the safety is held by the QB and RB who can always check down to the outlet.

You're going to be right most of the time in assuming the Mike has a deep LB drop in Marinelli's defense; but not always.

The SL DB does blitz but that's where the safety must cover that area. The Mike should drop deep and he will need to pick up that crossing route. The safety is responsible for the RB and the QB running. There are only 2 LBs.

It's completely obvious and football 101. I'm baffled that there are people that are confused.

CowherdBoyRoy would blame it on Taco even if Taco was on the bench.

Stalk much?

Thus from a guy that freely admits he has no clue what the coverage is and who screwed up.

Taco fell down unblocked. But I guess you have no clue about that either? Maybe it was the play design? :lmao2::lmao:

Nah, the guy riding the bench right now is your hero Chaz green. How's that call working out for you?

It looks like a cover 3 shell with man under. Damien Wilson (57) immediately going for the TE release as opposed to dropping into a zone indicates the man under as opposed to the Cover 3 buzz others have suggested. In that scenario with the slot blitz, Heath would cover the slot receiver with the MLB responsible for the tailback out the backfield.

Impossible to know. The LB and Heath both ended up covering the same receiver; therefore, one of them was wrong.
Watch the other safety..he clearly is sprinting to the middle of the field. Single high safety...man under is the defense. Heath blew this. And with him being a. Veteran...that's inexcusable.
