Getting guys to focus on details like catching open passes and wide open INTs rather than just relying on X’s and O’s is more important.Tough and mean is overrated
Before we start lemme say these are largely subjective.
Everyone's stomach for various faults or preferences for certain characteristics will be slightly different.
That doesn't mean we can't agree on some basic truths tho so let's get rolling.
The Departed:
Ron Rivera -- Rivera is a tad overrated. He only had 3 seasons out of 9 where he finished at .500 or better, umm that's kinda terrible. He did have some real highs int here like the 15-1 season. But in the 4 season's since then 6,11,7,5(through 13 weeks when fired).
That's simply not very good results but he does know defense and he does bring in a team toughness.
Paired with a great offensive mind good things could happen.
Jason Garrett -- Redball had 10 seasons and only finished below .500 ONE TIME! That's actually very impressive. But there are some "issues". Lack of playoff success is ultimately the key one but he also was simply pretty bad as the offensive mind except where Romo really called the game via audible. As a walk-around CEO type in Dallas you are really managed by a "Board". In short, walk-around CEO types are not ideal in Dallas. JG will land somewhere but it better not be as head coach in Dallas. I'm honestly not sure why he would want that thankless job anyway. Its no win for him.
The Known interviews:
Marvin Lewis -- Lewis is 60 and has been around forever. He has a .500ish record for his career but an 0-7 playoff record. Coaching that long and not getting a single playoff win is really hard to do. Hiring him would result in your stadium being burned in most NFL cities. BUT he does have some elite defensive ties. He came up as the LB coach in Pittsburgh than the DC for the Elite Ravens defense. If Lewis was coming in to be the DC and you could place a Sean Lee under him as LB coach and DC in waiting that is a very Cowboys type move. And no one burns the stadium down. Not much to say here except this was either meet the Rooney Rule, drive the fanbase further crazy for fun, or to discuss defensive openings.
Mike McCarthy --- MM has to be called Eninem if he gets hired here right? He's by far the most decorated coaching candidate having went to 4 NFC Champ Games and winning 1 Lombardi trophy. Now any Packers fan will gladly rattle off how glad they were he's gone. But I dare say they are more than a bit spoiled having been the best NFC team during the period MM coached them.
All that said there's always warts. No one this battle-tested has come though without some.
McCarthy is an "old-head". He had a 13 year run in GB. He is going to be tied to offense from the 90s because we move on quickly. He was under .,500 his final two seasons in GB. Aaron Rodgers hated him at the end.
All that said, AR hates everyone including his own family. His dip in play hasn't vanished with a new hire they've simply relied on him far less.
He did have a year off which I like. It refreshes people and lets them clear their heads. He took some of that time to seriously study analytics. He learned about the data that is collected and became a BIG FAN. He has a full on required data department anywhere he goes.
The Hopefuls:
Wink Martindale -- Wink is the DC for the Baltimore Ravens who appear poised for a long playoff run. His defense has been excellent. Issues? Galore for me.
Wink has been a DC only 2 seasons. Any DC would look pretty good with Baltimore running the ball and controlling the clock at the rate they have this year. I'm a fan of a possible defensive coach hire but this bird needs some more seasoning imho.
Greg Roman -- Staying in Baltimore the offensive there is a thing of beauty. Lamar is picking people apart with legs and arm to the tune of NFL MVP status. Easy to love what Roman has done. But he's been the OC only 1 season. And he has a pretty sad run in NY with the Jets. He does have some skins however and was solid with Kaep in San Fran a decade ago. Roman will get a shot somewhere but I'm not a huge fan of one year mega leaps.
Josh McDaniels -- Josh is a very bright offensive mind. He's been able to appease a demanding Belichek for a long time. He's won lots of Lombardi's in Boston. All that said he comes with warts as well. He was pretty bad in Denver as a Head Coach and then backed out on the Indy job which cost us our DC.... He's also a pretty surly guy who learned his media approach from BB.
The Longshots:
Calling all college coaches longshots as we've been told they aren't on the immediate radar.
Urban Meyer -- My gut says Urban chatter is all driven by his agent. He is a big name but has no real NFL ties and a tarnished compliance rep w the NCAA. But he is a big-time winner. He's won at every stop and does so quickly. If you want a cut throat nothing matters but winning guy he's a good option. You simply have to put up with any NCAA to NFL learning curve.
Lincoln Riley -- Lincoln I know well enough from afar. He was a Red Raider walk on and is an Air Raid protege of Mike Leach. He's likable and very hard working. He's had OU atop the Big 12 for his entire tenure on that campus both as OC then as HC. Warts are relative youth and how heavily OU has relied on it's offense to win games. Something you really can't do in the NFL. Right now he feels like an Andy Reid ceiling type guy. Really good but never great.
Matt Rhule -- Matt would actually my choice of college hires. He was a Penn St Linebacker that has grown into an offensive coach. He has brief NFL experience has been a program maker. He elevates all areas of the programs he takes over O, D and ST. I suspect he is hired very shortly but not in Dallas.
My gut has said for a while now(before we knew he'd be interviewed) that Mike McCarthy would be the choice. He's got the skins on the wall Jerry respects and he has a properly crafted interview speech with slideshows about how he'd innovate and use data. But again those warts that Green bay fans see aren't lost on Jerry and Stephen. I'm just not sure the Jones' can have such a high bar as to take all that success for granted.

Very interesting. The #1 issue is that Jerry won't have the Garrett type of attachment to any new Head Coach.
It is very similar to the Dez situation. Jerry was attached to Dez and over-ruled Stephen's objections to giving Dez the big contract.
Since the Dez contract and subsequent cut of Dez, Jerry has let Stephen run the football operations on all aspects except firing Garrett.
Once Garrett is replaced by anybody, Stephen Jones will be able to run the football operations similar to "normal" teams and will be able to fire the not-Garrett Head Coach at anytime.
Garrett was Jerry's last bastion of hope for the Jerry method to work out. All the players on the roster, the scouting dept., etc. are Stephen Jones decisions. Stephen Jones is coordinating the hiring of the new Head Coach. Jerry does not really care on regards to choosing between guys like Mike McCarthy, Marvin Jones or anybody that is NOT-Garrett.
Back in the day Jerry was surrounded by people like Larry Lacewell telling him that it was a good idea to hire Dave Campo. Lacewell didn't want to be usurped by a strong Head Coach which is exactly what happened when Parcells was hired and then fired Lacewell. Even after Parcells people like Lacewell were still handing around giving Jerry "Advice".
Stephen Jones has NOW managed to surround Jerry with people that take their lead from Stephen (family members, Will McClay, etc.).
That has been working with regards to players; however, it is much more difficult with Garrett because most of the Jones family love Garrett.

nopeCoaching for Jerry Jones though that is somewhat impressive.

McCarthy and his analytics dept is very intriguing to me.
I also like his idea of having 2 "futures" coaches...1 on offense...1 on defense...who will analyze formations and plays to stay on top of what works and what doesnt.
very forward thinking.
very smart.
not sure if anyone else does that in Nfl.
hats off to McCarthy for thinking outside the box.
I said it earlier but the most exciting description to me belonged to Meyer. I want to do it the Cowboy way and shock the NFL World and hire the best college coach out there, new blood, new ideas and a big stick. This is the guy who gets me excited. Tarnished NCAA compliance, Bah Humbug! Let’s Do It Jerry!Nice write up.
Thing is there are no perfect candidates available
