Either of these two candidates would be my top choice if I had a say.
My preference of the two would be Martindale as he's always fielded a darn good defense and I prefer a defensive minded HC this time around.
Plus, I was intrigued by who he was rumored to want as his choice of OC in Joe Brady. Sadly after the recent leak that it looks like our next HC isn't going to get a say in the offensive staff I see him possibly slipping away to the Giants.
Roman would be an interesting choice given his success in SF and now the job he's been doing with Lamar. If we're to continue riding the Dak train going forward then maybe he might be able to bring that success here as well and turn Dak back into more of a dual threat again who doesn't simply rely on his arm which remains inconsistent.
However, my gut feeling is starting to leave me to believe that it's going to be Mike McCarthy who I'm torn on. I know there's been a lot of debate on whether or not he's a good coach, and much debate on him only having the record that he does due to Rodgers. To be fair, the same could be said about Payton who has had the benefit of Brees.
If we ultimately go in that direction I'm hoping that a year away helped to re-energize him and that he's actually learned from the analytics study that he seems to be learning from.
My concern here is what will happen if he has no control over his staff. Hopefully, at the very least, he'll get a say on who he wants running the defense as it needs an overhaul.
I think this will be the popular take across fanhood among NFL guys.
Baltimore has created magic this year.
But there are things I really dislike about going w either BALT guy.
With Wink it is brevity of service. He's been a DC for only 2 years.
We have zero record of him over time or at higher level of coaching.
John is a really good head coach who often elevates others under him.
Roman has a history of good performances with mobile QBs. But he did have a pretty bad NY Jets stint as well.
I think a lot of OCs would look good with Lamar Jackson right now.
He's as or more elusive than any RB in football and gives you at least replacement level passing to boot.
That's an awful fun toolset to deploy.
But QBs can't repeatedly get hit or they wear down like RBs do.
We won't deploy Dak as some 1000 yard rusher.
If we did his career arc would probably look much like Cam Newtons.
Dak is more a Ben R type guy minus bathroom stall hook ups with young girls.
So I'm not out of those dudes personally but I don;t see enough to say OK cool I'll wait on them to be finish their season.
