I wouldn't worry to much. A 5.8 earthquake is relatively mild. Even the epicenter would only experience light damage. (well, unless were talking about extremely poorly crafted buildings)

Buildings on the east coast aren't engineered to withstand seismic activity. Anything over 4ish can cause significant damage.

Colorado also had an earthquake today

(CNN) -- A moderate 5.3-magnitude earthquake that rattled southern Colorado early Tuesday morning was the largest to hit the state in more than 40 years, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The quake's epicenter was seven miles southwest of Cokedale, and 180 miles south of Denver. There were no immediate reports of casualties.

A dispatcher at the sheriff's office in Las Animas County, which includes Cokedale, said the quake lasted almost 30 seconds. The office received reports of rocks falling on a highway and of some structure damage.

It was the largest in a series of earthquakes that struck the area. As of 5 a.m. local time (7 a.m. ET), the USGS reported seven quakes centered just south of Cokedale since midnight.

Was in the lab with my headphones on banging out code. As soon as I felt the tremors I grabbed my GHB and bugged out. Cell towers were getting hammered, but already prepped family that texting is better at times like these. Secondary would be Facebook if internet connection is still up.

Good time to review your preps. Have enough food/water and fuel for a few months. Non electric cooking tools in order. Zombie hunting gear oiled and prepped from last range session. Could be useful to review primary meeting/rally points with family members.

I live at the western foot of the Appalachian mts. We felt it.

Those big ol mountains protect us from most all natural disasters so it was weird to feel.

I was surprised to feel it here when the epi-center was near Richmond.

I work in a 4 story building, .. on the 2nd floor.
It was my first earthquake.
It was kind of like, "what was that?"
The floor and my chair were moving, and cubicle walls were swaying.
Probably lasted 10 seconds.

about 20 miles from epicenter. everything is ok here. Just scared the living hell out of me, thought we were getting bombed or something. It almost felt like a low flying helicopter.

A 5.9 magnitude earthquake that was centered in Richmond, Virginia and felt as far as New York City and New England.

Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly reported at 2:30 pm that their bureau received information from a producer saying that a Captiol Hill Police officer says that the Washington Monument may actually be tilting as a result of the earthquake.....

Yep. Probably resulting from too much seismic stimulus.

A 4 is extremely weak and isn't likely to do any serious damage. There are over 6,000 4 rated earthquakes every year and most don't do any *real* damage.

The building I'm in is about 32 stories (about 430 feet tall) and was built in 1986. I'm sure it could it's within code to withstand a magnitude 7 quake. Now, there are buildings around me that are 70+ years old that probably aren't.

On a serious note, my sister and brother-in-law live in Silver Spring. She said that they lost the ability to make cellphone calls out, but were able to send out texts instead. She was surprised to hear from me when I called after receiving her message about the quake.
