Would Dallas have to release somebody to bring Brent on?

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Josh Brent will be allowed to join his teammates at the club's practice facilities two weeks earlier than the NFL originally ruled when suspending him.

Brent, who was convicted of intoxication manslaughter this year in the 2012 death of practice squad player Jerry Brown, is suspended for the first 10 games of the season. But Cowboys owner Jerry Jones says Brent will be at team headquarters on Monday "to continue everything but practicing with the team."

The NFL ruled this month that Brent had to stay away from team facilities for the first six weeks of the season unless it was to meet with rehab counselors.

This is such a weird ruling to me. He's already served jail time for this offense. He should be allowed to practice.

Meanwhile, Ray Rice got two games for punching his girlfriend in an elevator with no jail time assessed. The NFL is weird. I get that intoxication manslaughter is a horrible thing, but he's already paid his debt to society.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell announced a 10-game suspension for Brent on Sept. 2 and put in place conditions that have to be met before Brent can return to the field. Brent immediately filed an appeal Sept. 2.

According to the NFL’s collective bargaining agreement, appeal hearings have to be heard within 13 days following the suspension. The NFL didn’t hold a hearing within that 13-day window, a source said, opening the door for Brent to receive the modified conditions. The NFL agreed to the revised conditions for Brent after he had sought immediate reinstatement, a source said.

He can't start practicing till week 9 and can start playing week 10.

I think he has the Ray Rice debacle to thank for the NFL dropping the ball on his hearing.

Why is everyone so excited? They didn't reduce his games. It says in the highlighted piece he still has to sit out the first 10 games. He only gets to start working out and going to meetings 2 weeks earlier. This doesn't help the team on the field any sooner and quite frankly no one is even sure that this guy can actually help the team on the field.

I don't think they need him, but injuries could happen between now and week 11.

Bishop is playing well and Nick Hayden has even made a couple of plays per game.

T. Crawford looked good at DT against the Saints.

They might need him 7 weeks from now. Let's see how injuries play out. But I agree with you, I think Hayden is going to remain regardless.

I wonder if they have to activate Brent after the suspension or if they can keep him on something like the NFI list if they aren't ready to activate him.

I think having him for training camp next year would be a really good thing, but I'm not certain that he will really be ready coming in mid-season this year. He's never played in this defense. Yes, he will be allowed to practice for several weeks prior to the suspension being over, but most practice reps are going to go to players that are playing that week.

Brent was never anything special to me when he was in. Never understood all the hype around him as a player.

This is a good concern, X. And the added weeks of a formal development period are paramount to this man becoming whole on the field again.

Brent is an upgrade at the 1/3 IMO. He will have the aerobic conditioning as well as the strength etc to play. Modern training techniques give you that. And two weeks training with the team will get his football legs under him.

Although Brent can't practice with the team, Still good news for Brent to attend team meetings and get a good sense of what his role is and what is expected from him.

I am pulling for Brent

Brent is a useless sack of you know what. He cannot help the team football wise. Why does anyone think he can help even a little? He is less than a JAG. A bottom feeder. I would hate to cut a young kid that has potential for a fat sack of nothing.

Do you have some objective evidence to validate your critique?

He may have in fact lost some strength and technique in the interim, but I don't think anyone knows that.

1.5 sacks in 39 games back when he was in playing shape should be all the evidence you need. Who would you like to cut to make room for him?
