I don't think it's Sam athletic skills or his off-the-field interests that caused him to not be picked up for anyone's PS prior to Dallas Signing him... It was the media circus that teams were afraid of.

I agree. ESPN discussing Sam's showering habits has not done him any favors.

That the issue with these advocacy groups...they always attack the team or the college or the league. And they refuse to, for whatever reason, attack the media for causing as many problems and altering the perception in a negative fashion about the person they are advocating for.

I honestly believe that 95% of fans across the league do not care of a player's sexual orientation. But, when everything about Michael Sam is being put on sports media outlets all of the time, it starts to turn people off towards Michael Sam. And when the media starts accusing the Rams, the NFL, the Cowboys of being anti-gay and doing it solely for publicity, it just turns more people against it.

Gay rights advocacy groups should be more concerned with Sam being treated fairly and I think the league and the Rams have done that. I think the media has not even come close to treating Sam fairly and it is to the detriment of gays and Michael Sam. But, the gay rights advocacy groups seem to be oblivious to that.

Broaddus talks about Sams ability to play left or right defensive end. And he actually played both spots this preseason and had success on both sides.

The best thing IMO about Sam is the guy uses his hands to keep tackles off him. Which is suprising because he really doesnt have long arms. He uses great leverage too to passed blockers. and reads the QB when on a block and has the ability to get off the block and pursue.

Granted he was doing this against 2nd stringers but it just seems like he does things that none of the DEs on this team have grasped, the ability to get off blocks. I can see him taking somebodies job at some point of this season.

That is true he did this vs 2nd units, however he also did it vs 1st string players in the SEC. He played against top competition in college and did well enough to earn the co Defensive MVP of the SEC when you consider all the defensive talent in the SEC that is a pretty big honor. He like all other college players now have to step their games up to the next level and fact is even top rated players will fail and some guys who people have little expectation from will end up having success. The one thing he does have that you can't teach is a desire and work ethic to be the best player he can. He may not make it that is still to be determined.

Position Flex. Great breakdown by Broaddus. Sam can play and will help this defense and this team.

You'd think he was a first round draft pick after watching this video.

Instead of a player who was released and not picked up by anybody on waivers or quickly added to a practice squad.

I always hope for the best for anyone Dallas signs, but the possibility of Sam turning out to be the player some are guaranteeing he will be is very low. There's always an exception or two, but I wouldn't count on it.

Would love to discover the next KGB, but not many of them are out there.

I would have loved to hear what Marinelli said to him when they brought him in. I read bits and pieces of what he said to some of the guys last year and he didn't pull any punches.

I think he will stick with the Cowboys. If this was a Jerry call, then its going to take alot for Sam to get cut

I don't think this is a so called Jerry call. I think like all personnel moves this is a Jones, and coaches making the call as a group. Dallas went as far as to contact players on this move to gauge their reaction so I don't buy into this is a Jones move it was a Cowboys move. I don't know if Sam will prove he can get it done but as Garrett "noted that bolstering the defensive line is a high priority for the Cowboys, and he stressed that Sam is going to have to prove himself on the practice squad."

This is the key. People keep saying "he was going against backups" but yeah, so were our backup DEs and they didn't do as well as Sam seemed to be doing. Nobody's expecting him to come in and be the 2nd coming of Tony Tolbert, but if he can develop into quality depth, then it's a GOOD THING for Dallas.

While I do not think you are wrong; I do think this is a situation where extenuating circumstances could exist.
In short I think Sam was a r4 or r5 value and those guys do turn into legit NFL starters more than rarely.
At one point the Cowboys DL was strong enough that Jason Hatcher was a back up.
The Rams are much stronger than that right now.

If Sam develops into a rotational guy as your 7th or 8th DL he is a heck of a pick up considering we've invested nothing but PS money.

I don't have high hopes for Sam, because he doesn't look special to me. But at least in his case, there is a good extenuating reason for teams to have passed on him. He's not your typical 7th rounder that also happened to be available after cut downs. There are guys out there--Vontaze Burfict is probably the best recent example--who are just football playing dudes who's production defies their draft classification. I'm not saying Sam is likely to be one of those guys. Well, I guess I am saying he has a chance to be, and that it just likely wouldn't be at that level. I think he's a guy you have a hard time putting in your defensive rotation, but, if you're thin enough that you actually do, you probably get surprising production from him.
We're so thin at DE, I'll take a look at whatever we can get right now.

Yep, Dumerville and Suggs arm length is 32". Sam's arm length is average or better.

But on the other hand you've also just compared someone who is a likely strong side 4-3 DE to a couple of 3-4 OLB. And I don't think I've seen anyone suggesting that Sam has the physical ability to try and be a OLB. I think it will be interesting to see what he develops into, if anything.

What gay rights advocacy groups are you talking about? The only thing I've seen related to that issue is that a group worked with the Rams and Sam for about a week preparing both for Sam's arrival and issues that might arise.

In fact, if you google the story about Michael Sam's showering habits, you get 100s of hits attacking the media representation - you need to advocate in situations when no one else is. Pretty much every newspaper in the country criticized ESPN - not like this was some situation where they were getting away with something

if he develops into a starting DE, great! if he develops into a quality backup DE, great! If he doesn't develop and is just another in a long line of failed DE projects in Dallas... oh well.

There really is virtually no downside to bringing him in on the PS, seeing what he's got and seeing how they can develop him in this defense. Plus he comes cheap and that's the best upside of all.

I see him by the 3rd game when we are 0-3...

Both of those players have played in a 4-3 at times.

Baltimore switched back and forth between the 3-4 and 4-3 over the past few years.

Dumerville was definitely a 4-3 DE in 2012 and possibly some other years.

To me it would seem to say that our talent level at the DE position is so bad that a guy that couldn't even make the Rams or any other teams practice squad is good enough to be on our 53 man roster.

For what its worth, the rams have a good front 4 on defense.
