Broaddus: Cowboys Laying Ground Work for Trade Down

I was just thinking the other day that our 2nd round pick is kind of in a weird spot. There are several OL and a few others that make sense but none really stand out above the rest. I was thinking they would move off of that pick and/or #9.

Id be thrilled w/ Carimi and Pouncey

As high up as they are in the 2nd round, one of their objectives would be that they want to get 2 players with first round grades in this draft. That could be accomplished by trading up with the second.

I was thinking they could go up or down from 40. Ijalanana, Wis, Cannon, Aaron Williams, Not a ton of separation there. So they could slide back and pick up lets say a 4th and change.

Now I dont think they would trade down in the 1st and trade down in the 2nd. I think youre scenario is a good one. Trade down in the 1st and back up in the 2nd and maybe get 2 players from the Castanzo, Carimi, Pouncey, Prince, Watt, Cam, Solder Tier.

lol, if we take Nate Solder, I might murder someone.

It would be typical Cowboys though, take Nate and then act perplexed when he's not very good. "I don't *lip smack* understand how..uhh... *lip smack* this could happen."

Yeah Nate Solder is about as physical as a box of Kleenex.

The guy is constantly getting worked. Even at the SR bowl it was just more of the same from Solder.

He sucks and I hope we don't make that mistake.

Cowboys laying ground work for trade downs. Most likely on clock but need two things. See which way first 8 go and names for teams 2 go up 4

Do they like Tyron Smith more than Castanzo, Carimi, Pouncey, Prince, Watt, Cam, or Solder plus a 3rd and 6th.

I think if Julio is on the board at 9 then the Rams will give up enough picks to make it worth it.
This all makes sense assusming 1) the Cowboys have a few players clustered together that aloows them the flexibilty to drop down without risk of losing the impact player they seek (so more bang for buck) and 2) they, as mentioned in the OP, do this in real time on draft day to see how the draft falls.

You always want to maximize value, but not at the expense of getting the players that you need and who can contibute to your team.

So don't get too cute, but don't overpay either if you can help it.

Not a Solder fan at all, but Von Miller did say that he was the toughest OT if ever went against for whatever that means.

I've said this on here before but I think he's out of the league in 5 years due to back problems, he has no bend, and I can't believe that can be taught. He's so tall that it's uncomfortable for him to bend.

Mosley saying again this morning via Twitter that Dallas looking to move down off 9. Says they like Watt, Jordan and Prince. Could we be back to going defense with the first pick?

Solder=epic fail.

at 9 yes i agree but as our second pick whether it be late first or second round then there's value there.

tell you what im feeling a little jealous about these houston trade up rumors for peterson.

im at the point where i can accept peterson going before us naturally but if someone trades up for him i'll be pissed that it wasnt us. Unless say they had to give up a ton to get him and i dont consider a 3rd round pick a ton. petey and ijalina in round 1 and 2and i would be extremely happy . rounds 4-7 do what you want cb, ol de, etc i just grabbed 2 pro bowl type players save the developmental guys for the mid to later rounds.

What range is Carimi supposed to go in?

I would love to trade down and get Watt/Jordan and trade back up from the 2nd and add Carimi.

I'm still sticking to wanting Peterson if he makes it to 6 or Smith at 9/small trade down.

I've been thinking this for a while. We're more likely to get an elite difference-maker player if we go defense rather than offense in the first round.

The guys we would get for offense with our first round pick are not elite-type guys. Tyron Smith is the only one who may fit the bill, but it's very possible the team is not enamoured with him.

I'm starting to warm up to a trade down for Watt or Jordon or another OT besides Smith who probably isn't an immdiate help at RT over 4-7 different OTs available. It's his upside that makes you like him so much. The "IF" factor is high with him but the initial gain for this squad in 2011 can be eclipsed later in the round than the 9th choice on both sides of the ball.

If the cowboys execute the trade down properly, it is absolutely positively, the smartest option for us

If we somehow snag Watt and Carimi...that would be a tremendous coup

I think one other OT to keep an eye on is Carpenter.

He is apparently seen as a top 40-50 pick now. The Cowboys may be able to get him with the 2nd round pick (without having to trade up back into the 1st round for Solder, Carimi, etc.).

Carpenter is probably the guy that we could realistically get at 40.

That easily trumps trading up and getting Peterson, imo.

Good call. Not to mention, Garrett probably knows alot about Carpenter, cause he's coached by his buddy Saban

If we trade down from 9, I'd imagine the goal is to trade back up to get either Carimi, Solder or Sherrod. If that plan doesn't pan out, I think plan B is most likely stay put and pick up Carpenter

OK, so it's decided then. We're trading out of the 9th pick with the Rams. We get the Rams 14th overall and there 3rd round pick (78th Overall) and a 3rd round pick in the 2012 draft.

Rams move up to take A.J. Green or Julio Jones, whichever is on the board.

14 - Aldon Smith - DE/OLB Missouri

Cowboys trade back up into the 1st round with Tampa Bay. We trade our 2nd round pick and our 3rd round pick to Tampa Bay for Tampa's 1st round pick (20th overall)

20 - Gabe Carimi ROT Wisconsin

78 - Devon House CB New Mexico State

110 - John Moffett RG Wisconsin

143 - Alex Henery K/P Nebraska

176 - David Carter DE/DT UCLA

220 - Zane Taylor C/G Utah

252 - Byron Stingily OT/OG Louisville

UFA Signings

Blake Bollis QB NW Missouri St., Zach Pianalto TE/FB UNC, Anthoney Gray DT Southern Miss.

FA Mike Huff, Devain Joseph. Re-Sign Spears, Kosier and Sensy.

How easy was that?

I like to think that Pops might be hangging out with these guys.
Gone but not forgotten.

Ya think?
