When you evaluate the performance of the starting offensive line in Monday night’s game against the Raiders, at first glance you want to cast a critical eye at center David Arkin and the way that he played. But, it is really more than that.

On tape, Arkin was not the problem and for the number of snaps that he played in the game in his first start at center, it was actually a nice effort on his part. I’m not saying he was perfect, but to believe he was the reason they couldn’t run the ball or give Tony Romo enough time in the pocket is dead wrong.

Impossible. I was told by the experts on this board that Arkin was the worst Cowboys player ever.

You are obviously mistaken. This board directly led to Arkin being run out of Oakland and Oxnard just last night.

I believe many posters here personally emailed their opinions regarding Arkin directly to the front office and coaches.

Huge impact I'm told.

Gigantic even.

For the record, Broaddus and I are in lock step on our Arkin eval. He did a pretty good job (basically one mental breakdown on that screen pass) while playing with the starters, and did better and better as the game went on. He's not perfect, he has a long way to go, but I still think he could be a starter somewhere down the line. He wasn't even remotely close to the disaster that some people around here are trying to make him out to be.

The big problem was Dockery.

I defended Arkin last night for the same reasons as Broaddus.

This thread will be allowed to die a quick death. It goes against all the arm chair scouts opinions. and they dont like facts.

Which is to be expected. Didn't we just sign him a week ago or something close to that? Did we think he'd just be able to jump right in and start? Our scheme on the OL isn't the same as last year.

Cowboyszone is getting rediculous. I'm all for throwing someone under the bus but people are way to quick to judge a guy.

If you don't see potential that's one thing but to just say you know the guy sucks kinda makes you lose all credibility in my eyes.

Same thing I saw. However, I'm no scout.

Wouldn't you also agree that Costa would have been much better?

So the point of the article that the entire line was at fault and not just Arkin.

That really doesn't make me feel any better.:abuseme:

I tried to temper the anti-Arkin mob last night (I mean the dude's only been playing center for over a week) in the game thread, but of course, all the GM's had him cut by the end of the 1st quarter.

The thing is that after reading all week about how inept arkin was snapping the ball, and how the cowboys would have to sign Jim Otto from the stands, and the only play that i saw was the screen where he blocked the wrong guy, i also had the impression of arkin was a bad player. But glad he did good!

I don't dispute the fact that Arkin had an OK game considering but is OK good enough? He can not get push and that's going to be a problem. I think we all know that it's not just Arkin. It's the interior OL in general that needs to improve and quickly.

Well, I'll give you this much. Its true, Arkin wasnt the only one stinking it up. Seems like Tyron was our only lineman that one series that almost knocked Romo and Witten in the same play.

Depends what the Cowboys expectations are.

If they view him as a starter this season than no it's not good enough.

I'm pretty sure they think he is a year away. Even at guard.

My rule of thumb on player evals is to ignore what is said on this site unless it comes from a credible poster.

A rule of thumb in discerning credible posters is to ignore those posters who are adamant, no doubt, worst this, worst that, etc. The same can generally be applied to people who declare a player best this, best that, etc.

Discuss player evals with people capable of having reasonable and respectful discourse. Ignore all others.

You just have to ignore the knee-jerk folks. There are no two ways about it. Don't try to change their mind. Ignore them.

Good to know that Broaddus is the end all be all of any Cowboys conversation, especially since he's associated with ESPN.

When he states Romo is a steaming pile, let's make sure we start a thread about that, and treat it like it's atruth that can't be denied.

Of course, Costa would have been quite a bit better, as would have Kowalski. But for a guy getting his first start ever at a new position, he really wasn't that bad. If he can learn to snap the ball AND play with power, he might actually turn out to be pretty darn good. Right now the biggest problem he's having is exploding after having to concentrate so hard on the snap.

Thank you for the input on Arkin CS, could you offer a little more detail on the troubles Dockery had?
