As a scout you are trained to write what you see and see what you write. You want to paint a picture for that person who is reading your scouting report like you are not in the room to describe that player. My teammates at DallasCowboys.com love to get on me about the way I write stories, not for the subject manor but for how I can take a hundred word piece and turn it into five times the amount in a heartbeat.

I admit, I can be too wordy and draw the subject out a little long but again, it’s about painting that picture. Last week, Nick Eatman wrote a column that used few words but most importantly in my view from a personnel man’s perspective, made perfect sense. Why not take a look at Vince Young as a third quarterback for this team? I am sure that you can come up with several reasons why not and before I observed Young’s pro day in Austin, I would have been right there with you but Nick’s piece actually presents several positive reasons why this team should consider it.

Throughout his career, we have all seen the brilliance of Vince Young but we have also been a part of his short comings. I understand where there have been moments of inexcusable decisions of not protecting the ball but I also remember times where he danced through the rush delivering a strike down the field to beat the Giants. Sure there are plenty reasons to not want to work with Young but there also are some moments to hang your hat on.

From a scouting point of view, I understand what you have to be able to do on the mental side of the game to be a successful quarterback in this league and there will be those that say that Young isn’t smart enough which I have to disagree with. Young appears to be very coachable and the example I will give you once again comes from my visit to Austin where I watched him throw the ball. When Young came into the league, his mechanics would not remind you of Troy Aikman but more of an Olympic shot putter. He wouldn’t throw the ball off his index finger but he would push it like a shot put. During his workout, it was clear that Young had worked with University of Texas offensive coordinator, Major Applewhite on his throwing motion.

His drive away from center, foot work and arm motion was tighter and better put together. He threw the ball with pace and his accuracy was outstanding at all levels. It didn’t matter whether the target was stationary or on the move like Marquise Goodwin running the deep “In” Young had the ball right there. I remember times in Young’s career where he was all over the place with the ball making his receivers have to work much too hard for a reception. This was still the physically gifted quarterback with the ball in his hands but technically, he was a totally different player.

I'd much rather just keep Orton. Despite his shortcomings, he's been very good at protecting the ball over his career. (One year with more interceptions than touchdowns and more than six fumbles — his first year.)

Young has more dynamic ability, but is also more likely to hurt the team more than help. (Four out of six years with more interceptions than touchdowns. Three years with eight plus fumbles.)

Hell no.

Things are too calm around Dallas for some in the media apparently. They have to "speculate" on something that would be very polarizing at Valley Ranch just to stir things up.

1. Garrett would never want VY in Dallas

2. Orton is a much better backup than Vince would ever be.

But since VY is a UT product, a lot of Cowboy fans would be for the move and so speculation of VY in Dallas will generate a lot of talk.

I am not as high on Orton as alot of people. If he had to play more than a couple games you would clearly see his short comings. That said I really dont like VY from the neck, up. He is soft as pudding IMO. Cant have that and be successful in this league and I dont want to burn a roster spot on a gadget QB.

The Bills kept Tevarious Jackson over Young. He's so dumb, he can't be trusted not to just throw his money onto the street.

He's been bounced from three teams in a league with barely enough QB's to go round. If fat Andy couldn't get him off the scrap heap what chance is there?

Does DallasCowboys.com have the absolute worst writing staff or is it just me? Being "wordy" about being wordy is middle school and amateur. He completely lost me before he even started the meat of his article. Sports columns of this nature shouldn't read like open-mic non-fiction night at the poetry house.

Should say "Finger Painting" because the picture will look like that of a kindergartner.

1. Will it cost the team lots of money to bring him in for a look? NO!

2. Will he make the team better by being the QB of the scout team to project the new scheme the league is embracing, thus allow the team to practice at full speed? YES!

3. If, like Orton, he never reaches the field, what does it matter? DOESN'T!

4. If the back-up is playing because Romo goes down, again, with the expected results, what does it matter if it is Vince Young or Johnny Unitas? DOESN'T, Dallas is sunk then!

Swinging at pitches in the dirt from an emotional standpoint has become the favorite indoor sports for this site.

One does wonder what the heck is going on with this guy. I like the idea of him running the scout team when we have a game against a team with a QB like Wash does. There has to be something going on that's not being voiced here or in other threads.

Normally, I'd agree. But I do have a minor concern about Orton after reading about how he's been playing this off season. Is Orton just rusty? Is he just off his game for now? Not sure.

The only thing I do know is that Brad Johnson was ok for us in 2007, but in 2008 he fell off a cliff! All the signs were there in the 08 pre season, but we rolled with his noodle arm and it cost us.

I'm not saying this has suddenly happened with Orton (Johnson was quite a bit older). But if Orton has lost it completely, it'd be good to have an alternative. Might be worth having VY in during TC and choose between him an Orton before the season starts.

That's the second article that has come out of the main site.

I wonder if they're prepping us for what's eventually coming?

I can see this happening.

I wouldn't hate the move.

I don't want to read much into Orton's play in OTAs/minicamp. There really isn't any reason for his skills to suddenly fall off.

I can understand the desire to have insurance just in case it's happened, but I don't see Young as much insurance. I also don't see wasting a "third-QB" roster spot on him just so he can run scout team.

If Dallas has concerns about Orton, then the team needs to keep looking and trying to claim QBs who might have the ability to drive the bus for a few games if Romo's out. Young isn't a bus driver; he's a race-car driver who crashes far too often.

If we are in market for a 3rd QB to give the young guys a chance of looking decent in the Pre-Season why not bring in Leftwich? I know he can't move worth a crap but he has an absolute cannon arm, unlike Stephens or Williams provide.

I guess no one was watching VY/6 last year. He has no talent. Orton is an NFL QB, VY isn't.

I cannot understand what these knuckleheads see in VY? They keep talking about things he supposedly did in the NFL, that I never seen him do. I think they are (mis remembering, LOL) things he did in college they are trying to make us think he did it in the NFL.

I won bets with a best friend another guy and his wife, another guy, and I told my pastor(I did not bet with the pastor) he was a big VY fan, I told them VY was not going to make it in the NFL.

It took 5 yrs his first contract that was the term of the bets, but I won.

VY is Garbage as a QB, he should have listened and switched to receiver.
