The OLineman that I wanted them to draft late or sign as a UDFA was Alvin Bailey. I liked him better than Warford. I still can't figure out why he didn't get drafted. He has been the active backup Guard for the Seahawks. He was reported to play well in the preseason/training-camp. I had both Bailey and Warford in the top 5 Guards for power; however, Bailey was much quicker and more athletic than Warford.

The word on Bailey was that he had serious mental health issues while at Arkansas. I heard this on SiriusXM from Gil Brandt the day after the draft.

wow floyd??? you have me confused with someone else. i've never brought him up once since the draft.

the board is their board, not mine nor yours. i have no allegiance to it so i see no harm in discussing the matter. plus if he wasn't even on their board then that opens another can of worms with the scouting dept.

I'm curious on this last part. Why does it open a can of worms if they didn't have them on their board? Because you liked him? Because I liked him?

First off I liked Warford and would have been pleased with him. However, that said, I wouldn't try and proclaim what I like being more informed or a reason to beat my chest when it is compared to a pro scouting departments board.

The fact is that given the choice I'd go with a pro scouting departents board over mine or any other fan out theres board every single time. Theres a reason they get paid to do that job and you and I and everyone else on a fan board complaining.

I have a hunch it was something more than just not supposedly being a fit with our current scheme that had Warford off of our board.

Yeah I've been thinking about this as well. It seems very unlikely he was taken off for that reason given the fact that Floyd was still on the board. If they were going to build their board like that Floyd would probably be gone as well. Per Ciskowski they try to build a "pure board" based on talent.

The only two things I would think would take him off the board entirely are 1) some kind of serious injury concern or 2) some kind of character issue. Given the team that drafted him it wouldn't surprise me at all if it's number 2. Lions have their fair share of questionable guys.

On the other hand maybe the leaked board is wrong and the Cowboys actually did have him on the board. It would be great if Broaddus could use some of those VR ties and get to the bottom of this.

You are correct that I did not back up my opinion re: the likely future performance of Gavin Escobar. It's kind of the point of my statement that we're going to have to wait and see. The reason being, as I explicitly said, TEs typically need a season or two to develop, and it was stated on draft day that this was a player who was going to have to develop both strength and blocking to play well in this league.

As for Warford, complaining about passing on him in the second when we'd taken and interior OL in the first, had a player we liked on board already, and later added a veteran off the street who turned out to be a nice addition is, I'm sorry, fretting over nothing. We obviously prioritized fixing the red zone offensive problems over stock piling an additional OG using a premium pick at a position that it has been repeatedly demonstrated can be filled from the middle rounds or lower. It would have been dumb to spend premium resources at an OG there, and complaining about not doing it is pointless.

We had a good draft. We've got good OG play right now. We've got a swing backup who can also play C for us on game day. We can develop another quality OG at marginal cost starting this offseason and not set ourselves back. It doesn't matter how much you may have wanted Warford to begin with, or how many mock drafts you put him in. It doesn't matter all that much how well he's playing. Other teams are going to draft players who play well in their systems, too. It's spontaneous fretting because there's no reason for it, and it only cropped up because of a random tweet that's just brought about by all this Guard-fretting that's gone on this entire last season when the problem with the team was never really with the OG play to begin with.
Escobar showed me enough in that Rams game to know that he will be a good TE really soon.

Honestly, can we have ONE thread about our oline that isn't derailed by Zordon and jnday? It's really getting annoying.

It is not as annoying as you popping up in every thread with your little arrogant remarks. I don't post on this board very often anymore because of unreasonable, homer attitudes like yours tends to make the discussion a joke. Get your facts straight before including my name in any of your drivel. I haven't posted much about the oline since the draft when I realized that it was useless trying to have a conversation with posters such as yourself , that tries to impress others with knowledge they don't have. Bless your heart, use the ignore feature .

I think so. He's big and lumbering, with hands like catchers' mitts. He's just not getting a lot of opportunities yet. We'll see, but I think he's a guy who's going to develop into a pretty good player.

You gotta love his size, especially with the way the TE position is going. Since they can't have their heads taken off anymore, I want a TE who is as tall as possible. Heck the next one we draft (yep I said next cause Hanna is showing very little), I want to be 6'8" or more.

Hanna is interesting cause of his speed and such, and has been getting a pass here, but its not like he is setting the world on fire right now. I don't think people here given the position the amount of importance it deserves in modern football right now. Having great TEs are game changers now with the new rules, they are harder to find than other skill positions except CB, and if you have 2 it can take your offense to another level.

We better hope Escobar works out, cause we will be behind the curve if he doesn't.

I would rather see Jerry go with Kipper's highest-rated-player- available in some situations lol.

Absolutely he will be the eventual replacement once Witten calls it a career.

Those getting twisted about the Escobar pick are forgetting that TE is a difficult position to come in and contribute much as a rookie. They often lack the strength for blocking in the NFL, have to learn blocking and receiving, etc.

Maybe Escobar ends up being a bust. Maybe he ends up being a great TE. Maybe somewhere in between.

What I am confident in... is that everyone that has posted in this thread is nowhere near knowledgeable enough about football to offer anything more than just a guess.

i saw somewhere that Leary practiced today - i think it was NFL nation on ESPN website

This is the news that this longgggg thread needed to hear.

All this for nothing, we are without the greatest pass rusher in Cowboys history, and we are sitting here talking about a guard who wasn't even hurt.......really?!?!?

Sometimes this place will drive you nuts.
