2) Tyron Smith had as dominant a day blocking in a practice as I had ever seen from an offensive lineman in a practice. It didn't matter who he was facing -- whether it was Greg Hardy or Randy Gregory -- his technique was flawless.

3) As well as Joseph Randle carried the ball during practice, he had better think twice about how he is going about his job in blitz pickup. There were two snaps where Barry Church hammered him back into Tony Romo that could have caused some issues. He was square in his technique but needs to be more firm.

4) As hard as Greg Hardy tried, Tyron Smith had his number. Where I believed that Hardy made his mistake is not trying to set Smith up on some inside rushes. When he went to the corner - Smith was there to cut him off. The problem for Hardy during this practice was that he tried to overpower Smith and that's just not going to happen. Round 1 to Tyron Smith.

5) Much of the talk from practice was the play of Morris Claiborne, and to a point it was justified. Claiborne spent the day rotating with Orlando Scandrickand Brandon Carr at both cornerback positions and looked comfortable in the snaps that he took. His diving interception of Romo was well timed and executed due to his position on Terrance Williams. Not to take anything away from Claiborne, but it wasn't Williams’ best route and Claiborne took advantage of it.

6) Thought it was a hit-and-miss day for Devin Street. He had a couple of nice snaps in the one-on-one period working against Scandrick, then he came back with a nice adjusting low catch along the sideline in 7-on-7 against Corey White. Later in that same period, he dropped a slant where I thought he left his feet for no reason while working against White. Then Claiborne had him so tied up on the jam that Street never located the ball -- which resulted in a near-interception for Romo.

Really liking the Gibson pickup.

Elite athlete that needs to work on technique.

No better group of men to be working with than our Olineman.

If Terrell McClain could play at a better than JAG level... that would ease some of my uncertainty about DT position.

And it would help limit Nick Hayden's snaps, he's played way too much the last two years.

Terrell McClain needs to stay healthy and focus on being consistent to make this happen.

Being able to put Mincey and Hardy inside on the nickel will limit Hayden's snaps anyway. Hopefully McClain can finish off his early down snaps.

Blitz pick up a must. Romo has to stay up right and healthy.
Sounds to me like he made the blocks, but he got popped. That's going to happen to a lot of RBs. Church has 20 lbs on Randle and, if he's blitzing from the safety spot, he probably had a good head of steam. Being good a blitz pickup is as much about effort as anything, and it sounds like Randle is putting the effort in.

Yep.

The good news is that he knew what/who to pick up.

The good news is that he knew what/who to pick up.

They mentioned on Talkin' Cowboys yesterday when Joseph Randle took first team practice reps when DeMarco Murray broke his hand and was iffy for the next game.

Tony Romo would identify the MIKE so everyone would know their blocking assignment. Randle would then point at his man so Romo could see if the runner knew who to block.

If Mo Claiborne and Tyler Patmon continue to perform well, it's going to keep putting pressure on Carr to justify that $8M salary.

There were times when Murray stonewalled the rusher, but there were also times when he got knocked back, but he knew who to block the majority of the time. Hopefully Randle can pick up the mental side of blocking and the physical portion will fall into place.

I also thought it was interesting how BB said that Linehan flat out refused to play Ryan Williams and that's why he was cut.

DeMarco Murray is an extremely physical, borderline violent, pass blocker.

Murray's almost too aggressive in his initial block, where he really lays into the blitzer. It would sometimes leave him in poor position to sustain the block if the pass didn't come out quickly.

But there's no questioning Murray's "want to" in the blocking department.
