I hope not. What is the big deal with him? I'm sure Johnson has had some input. Maybe he's a guy who needs a chance. I've become a Bartel fan for some reason.

I have not been a Bartel fan but watching him last Friday night, it was evident that he has made excellent progress from the time he first became a Cowboy. I think he could in time develop into a solid QB.

i hope this is just a ploy to get chris simms to make up his decision on whose veteran's minimum he will accept.

Bollinger likely headed to Dallas

The Cowboys have room for one more player on their eight-man practice squad, and I'm told that it will be quarterback Richard Bartel, who had an excellent showing in the final exhibition game against the Vikings.
Brooks Bollinger didn't play well for the Vikings in that game, but he'll probably be added to the Cowboys' 53-man roster after the season-opener against Cleveland. At that point, Bartel will be released from the practice squad. If the Cowboys signed Bollinger now, his salary for the 2008 season would be guaranteed.
It's a little surprising to see that the Cowboys would let another talented young quarterback get away. Last year, they tried to sneak Matt Moore through to the practice squad, but the Panthers signed him and he eventually became their starter.
Bartel has size (6-3, 233) and a live arm. Bollinger (6-1, 205) has more experience after playing for the Jets and Vikings over the past five seasons. He and Cowboys backup Brad Johnson played together in Minnesota.

I just don't get our infatuation with this guy. Is he really good enough to back up Romo in 2009? Is he really good enough to waste a roster spot on this season?

The only thing that makes sense about Bollinger over Simms is I could see Simms not embracing a "let us mold you to be our future backup" role. He probably hopes to get some film on him and get out there and compete for a starting job next year. Obviously, that isn't the case with Bollinger. So I get that.

But Simms notwithstanding, isn't there a better candidate to groom than Brooks freaking Bollinger?

I don't get it either. Honestly i rather have Simms if that's the case, atleast the guy has won games as a starting QB.

I don't either, and I'd much prefer Simms, but I think if Jason Garrett knows anything, it's what makes an NFL-caliber QB... so if the Boys go this way, I'll defer to that decision, and swallow my disappointment over not signing Simms...

Edit-- just went looking at his numbers over the past two seasons, here's what I found:

46 completions on 68 attempts (67.6%), for 537 yards (7.9 YPA), 1 TD and 2 ints... that works out to an 84.0 quarterback rating... the completion percentage, yards per attempt and quarterback rating are all quite good for a backup... especially when you factor in that he was sacked 13 times, meaning he was dumped right at once in every six times he dropped back... he did not get much pass protection... in addition, he completed 3 passes of 40 yards or more in those 68 attempts, so he wasn't just dumping the ball off...

i think this is a jerry jones move to save money and not spend that money on chris simms

another thing if this is true about cowboys wanting bollinger is the brad johnson link;

brad was teammates with bollinger in minnesotta, and to me, brad knows he would have no competition with bollinger at backup QB, (now with chris simms brad johnson would) so from what i have read on posts, thats why brad is pushing for bollinger

If this is true, it simply means the end for Johnson next year. Bollinger did very well when he was pressed into play in the past, in spite of Thursday. He would be a capable back-up to Romo next year and would be satified as the backup. Very similar to what Garrett was. I like Simms, but Simms will probably be a starter at some point, esp in Chicago, where he will end up.
