idk, I think they think he's out of position at RT

he played RT for the Falcons, but Vick was left-handed, I think he's a more natural LT, but of course they already have Joe Thomas there

Exactly and that's why I said Joe Thomas isn't losing playing time to anyone. This guy would be awesome depth but another team will sign him as a starter.

Once again, it would be nice to develop players at any position like some of these guys are thinking and have guys lined up and ready to go at every position when the vet holdover gets released or retires but it's not the reality in this league.

Who's to say we need to develop o-line talent now and not in another year or 2? I rather know this line gets our running game going and Tony Romo can still start in this league within the next 2 years because he's still healthy. Bring in the quality depth if we can get it. 3rd-6th round tackles rarely amount to squat. The good big men do not get over looked.

Tebow will be 23 or 24 when he graduates so he'll only have 5 years before he is too old. :laugh1:

When the season begins,
Adams will be 34
Kosier will be 30
Gurode will be 31
Davis will be 30
Colombo will 30

And one of them will be hurt at some point this season.

Schaffer will be 29 (he was 28 ten days ago). He could step in for Flozell if he gets hurt (or next year if Floz struggles this year). Or if one of the interior guys was hurt, we'd have the flexibility to move a T inside.

It would not prevent the development of younger players to have him. Free, McQ and Marten can still compete for a roster spot.

Schaffer may be too expensive or may be demanding to start. And if that's the case, then yeah, it's a bad idea.

But it's dumber than a box of hammers to oppose it because of the guy's age.

Actually, he just kind of helped me make my point... by pointing out the age of our OL...

We are going to need starters at a position or two sooner rather than later.

We need to be drafting and developing. Now.

Really?

There are at least 5 back-up positions on the o-line. But if we sign one guy who just reached turned 29 (retirement age around here, apparently), somehow we are going to stunt the development of young players? Is there only 1 backup o-lineman position? Or maybe, just maybe, the idea of using one back-up tackle position on someone who can help for the next 6 years while using the other on a 19 year old development player is a possibility? You think?

Shaffer's cap hit > rookie cap hit.

Shaffer wouldn't be here for 6 years, because he can probably push for a starting role elsewhere, also.

Exactly, it's foolish to think one of these guys might not go down for a few games during the season. So as long as Holland or Kosier is there to back up guard and a guy like Sheffer is there to back up either tackle we can hack out a few game injury on the line if need be.

Get a solid backup center and the o-line is a strength for this team again from starters to depth. The rookie wouldn't be able to play in a pinch anyways unless the guy was top 2 round quality. Even then it's an adjustment and we're not taking an o-linemen with our 2nd unless Andre Smith falls their. He won't.

So if Sheffer is willing to compete for a starting spot and be a backup if he can't win one at a fair price I'd like to look at this guy. Someone is going to start him though, tackles with starting experience in the best years of their career don't just float around. This would be a good opportunity.

Now we are on to the cap issue?

At what point on your evaluation do you get to the question of whether:

Schaffer's ability to help team > rookie's ability to help team?

So let's see if I can chart the thought process:

Question 1:
Who is younger?
Question 2:
Who is cheaper?
Question 3:
???
....

Question X:
Who has the ability to help the team win championships?

That strikes me as a backwards way of looking at a roster. Contributions are less important than age and salary cap? Huh.
_________

Look, I have no idea if Shaffer would come here or not and how much he would cost. It probably does not work.

But to make it an issue about age and "youth movement" when the guy was 28 ten days ago is BEYOND STUPID. It's gross asininity.

Championships are won with a mixture of veterans and young players. And when you have a 53 man roster, you have plenty of spots to give young people developmental time to help in the future. But you also need players who can step in and help the team now. The options ARE NOT MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE.

Guys, lets not forget, Colombo is only on a 2 year deal so having some insurance if things go backwards is another point that makes this possible acquisition more valuable.

You can say that about many rookies. Doesn't mean I'd trade draft picks for players, like the Skins trading a 4th for Freddie Mitchell, etc... just because Mitchell might have helped them more that year than a rookie WR.

Ok. Haynesworth has more ability to impact the team than signing Igor (different positions, but we could have slid Ratliff to DE). Or signing Brooking (yeah, yeah, different position also), but a jag off ILB would have worked. Wait. We have that in Brooking anyway.

Shall I rue the non signing of Haynesworth?

Look, I have no idea if Shaffer would come here or not and how much he would cost. It probably does not work.
Huh. Which then gets back to my original point; drafting one.

I said nothing about trading draft picks. This isn't about trading draft picks.

This is about putting your nose in the air because a free agent is 29 whopping years old.

Uhh, no. And I have no idea what your point is with that. Again, this is about you saying there is something negative about signing a guy who just turned 29 years old ten days ago as if there is a problem with him being too old. Haynesworth has nothing to do with that.

Vintage;2687012 said:

Which is still possible if we sign Schaffer. You seem to think that we can only do one thing per off-season to address the line and signing the ancient Schaffer would foreclose drafting players.

One might suggest that we approach the situation like this:

There are 2-3 backup tackle roster positions (3 if the 3rd guy can play inside). Bring in Schaffer, draft a Tackle, and let the 2 of them compete with Free, Marten and McQ for the positions. Schaffer would be your backup that you are relying on, the other would be the guy you are developing and hope to not have to rely on right now.

You seem to be suggesting that the two back up roles need to be, at all times, filled with 24 year olds in some sort of perpetual loop of rookie contracts.

But again, I have no complaint with anyone who is against looking at him because he wants to start or wants too much money.

I'm just saying your age point is STUPID!
