IRVING, Texas – The Cowboys’ roster for Week 1 against San Francisco is bound to look different by the time the weekend is over. But for the time being, this is the team’s 53-man roster – a group that has several surprising additions and subtractions, particularly at quarterback.

Quarterback (3): Tony Romo, Brandon Weeden, Dustin Vaughan – It’s been a topic of conversation all summer that Dustin Vaughan may have done enough to earn a job in Dallas, but it’s still a bit of a surprise to see him make the final roster. With so many other needs, it says a lot about what the Cowboys think of the rookie to keep him on the 53-man squad.

Running Back (4): DeMarco Murray, Lance Dunbar, Joseph Randle, Tyler CluttsThe debate throughout training camp was whether the Cowboys would keep three running backs and a fullback, or four running backs. Clearly Clutts got the nod over Ryan Williams, who was one of the last players cut from the roster. Clutts’ abilities on special teams might have been the deciding factor.

Wide Receiver (5): Dez Bryant, Terrance Williams, Cole Beasley, Dwayne Harris, Devin StreetLaRon Byrd and Jamar Newsome made a late push to earn consideration on the final roster, but the numbers weren’t in their favor. It’s likely that one or both of them will get practice squad consideration if they clear waivers.

Tight End (3): Jason Witten, Gavin Escobar, James Hanna This time last year the Cowboys kept a whopping five tight ends as a sign of commitment to using “12,” or two-tight end personnel packages. There never seemed to be any doubt that only the trio of All-Pro Witten and recent draft picks Escobar and Hanna would make the cut this year.

Offensive Line (9): Tyron Smith, Ronald Leary, Travis Frederick, Zack Martin, Doug Free,Mackenzy Bernadeau, Jermey Parnell, Darrion Weems, John WetzelMaybe the biggest surprise here is the decision to part ways with veteran starter Uche Nwaneri. He never made a push for starting time, but it seemed likely the Dallas native would provide reliable depth. Wetzel, a practice squad player in 2013, did enough to earn a job during the preseason.

Defensive Line (11): Henry Melton, Jeremy Mincey, George Selvie, Tyrone Crawford,Anthony Spencer, DeMarcus Lawrence, Nick Hayden, Terrell McClain, Davon Coleman,Ken Bishop, Lavar Edwards – A deadline day trade brings Edwards, an LSU product, to the team from the Tennessee Titans. The Cowboys gave up an undisclosed 2015 draft pick for the defensive end. That should give the Cowboys some breathing room, as the trade gives Dallas four defensive ends on the roster while they wait for Spencer to get healthy. DeMarcus Lawrence will likely be moved to injured reserve later this week, but must be on the active roster at the deadline.

Linebacker (6): Justin Durant, Bruce Carter, Rolando McClain, Kyle Wilber, Anthony Hitchens,Cameron LawrenceThe Cowboys opted to release seventh-round pick Will Smith, who was hampered by a groin injury for the early going of training camp. It looks likely that the top five in this group are going to see extended playing time, regardless of who the starters are. Cameron Lawrence is a core special teamer.

Defensive Back (9): Brandon Carr, Morris Claiborne, Sterling Moore, Tyler Patmon,Barry Church, J.J. Wilcox, Jeff Heath, Ahmad Dixon, Jemea Thomas –The suspensions of Orlando Scandrick and Jakar Hamilton have the position looking a bit different from what many initially thought. Jemea Thomas, the recently-signed Patriots castoff, can play both cornerback and safety – which helps offset the need for a 10th defensive back. For all the talk about him during camp,Terrance Mitchell’s problems with holding look likely to have doomed his roster chances. It will be interesting to see where the roster cut comes when Scandrick returns to the roster in Week 5.

Specialists (3): Dan Bailey, Chris Jones, L.P. Ladoucer – No surprises here, at least

Wonder if Hamilton makes the 53 once the suspension is over?? Too early to wonder about who gets cut for OScan. There are likely to be more than a few moves before then.

That's a pretty sad group of bodies. Not a single guy there without a huge question mark over his head.

Most significant move: It’s not so much who the Dallas Cowboys cut, but who they kept. For the first time since 2011, the Cowboys will keep three quarterbacks. In 2011 they had Tony Romo, Jon Kitna and Stephen McGee. Undrafted rookie Dustin Vaughan will join Romo and Brandon Weeden. For now. Vaughan has made great strides since May and finished the preseason with 212 yards on 22-of-43 passing with a touchdown. With Romo’s return from back surgery at least a minor issue, the Cowboys figured it was worth keeping Vaughan as a developmental player. It’s possible the Cowboys could cut Vaughan if they need help elsewhere in the next few days, which potentially would give them a chance to sneak the West Texas A&M product through waivers. Tailback Ryan Williams led the Cowboys in the preseason with 112 rushing yards and caught a team-high nine passes but was among the final cuts. With needs elsewhere, the Cowboys did not deem it necessary to keep four tailbacks. If Williams clears waivers, he could be brought back to the practice squad.

See you in a month: Cornerback Orlando Scandrick and safety Jakar Hamilton cannot have contact with the Cowboys for the next month now that they are on the suspended list. Both players will miss four games with Scandrick violating the league’s performance-enhancing drug policy and Hamilton violating the substance abuse policy. They will be allowed back on Sept. 29 and eligible to play Oct. 5 against the Houston Texans. Despite losing Scandrick, the Cowboys opted only to keep four corners on the roster: Brandon Carr,Morris Claiborne, Sterling Moore and Tyler Patmon.

Changes coming: The Cowboys kept 11 defensive linemen, but by Tuesday that number is expected to be 10 when rookie defensive endDeMarcus Lawrence is moved to short-term injured reserve as he returns from foot surgery. Lawrence will have to miss the first eight games, but can start practicing after six weeks. The Cowboys hope Lawrence will be able to be a designated pass rusher over the final eight weeks of the season. When he broke his foot in training camp, he was close to becoming the starting right defensive end. By putting Lawrence on short-term injured reserve, the Cowboys would not be able to use the designation on another player this season.

What’s next: A word to the wise for those on the bottom of the Cowboys’ roster: don’t celebrate. The Cowboys will be active in adding players either through trades, waivers or free agency. It’s not just about upgrading the bottom of the roster. The Cowboys need to upgrade starters and key backup roles at every level of their defense. Last year the Cowboys added four players after the final cuts before the season opener. They could potentially add more players this year, so dire is the state of the defense.

Wetzel and Weems over Ryan Williams and Laron Byrd is a travesty. Clutts is a below average FB. Never saw a team carry so many 1 techs either. Should have kept Minter over either Bishop (PS eligible) or Hayden (borderline NFL player, never mind starter).

All these guys can play although some have some apparent question marks. It's possible all the injured players returning will play more poorly than expected. All of them playing poorly is unlikely.

I know people are concerned about Spencer but he will in all probability play well although that's no guarantee.

McClain will be ok in this 4-3 certainly better than playing a 0 tech.

Ro I have little concern about. Football and money are great motivators.

Durant is a solid player although I don't know where he'll line up.

Carter's play is a concern; granted.

There is no reason for Melton not to play well. If his knee was going to have problems then it would be unstable and/or dysfunctional in a way that would be obvious by now. Still no guarantees he'll play well but very likely not to be his knee.

Crawford is very strong but his technique hasn't come along as I'd like. Still he'll be a steady player particularly against the run.

Selvie will get you some pressure and will play the run better than Ware did last year. IMO.

Mincey and Wilbur will give you more than a little and less than a lot.

Perhaps you're right but they know much more about the players than we do. There was a reason Minter was cut from the Bears, too. I don't have a good feel for this move as I don't really like any of them TBH.

Weems is your 4th tackle. Wetzel is there until Weems is well enough to play should a 4th tackle to necessary. Look for Wetzel to be one of your cuts when OScan comes back.

Look for Byrd and/or Newsome to make the PS should they clear waivers. I like Byrd a bit better but they are basically the same player so either one is fine. You don't need a 4th RB on the team as they won't dress for games. I don't like keeping Clutts over Williams either but either one was/will be likely to be cut in the next few weeks if not days.

I think the Minter decision will come back to bite us. He and Coleman have been the only ones to show up when the lights are on (like you said I don't know how they are peforming at practice, but games are the only things that count anyway). Not sure if Newsome is PS eligible anymore but I sure hope Byrd makes it through. Ryan Williams will be picked up, he is starting material. And Clutts has to be upgraded soon. There are much better FB available even if they are longer in the tooth.

I think you may be right about Newsome not making the PS now that you mention it. Minter was getting moved around too much in the run game. Bishop and Coleman were the right choices there IMO. I agree about Clutts. Until we find another FB he'll have to do. You can always get another RB although I liked Williams.

This season, the practice squad will be pretty important if injury raises it's head. The 'Turk' is just getting a cup of coffee for right now.

Clutts better earn his place early on in the season...but I still say, this group looks good enough to make four stops a game on an opponent's drive, and get two takeaways per game. I'm happy with that, until the adds coming this next season.

I don't understand the teams love affair with Cole Beasley. The gas I expelled this morning would have been enough to bring him to the turf.

Could you guys see us trading Carter? I don't see what's the point of keeping him around anymore.

Agreed.

It's doesn't bode well for this season, but I think by the end of the season some of those guys are going to be decent players in the future... But it will be in the future.
