I agree entirely, and they may very well get away with it this time, and I'm certainly rooting for that to be the case....but it's just not a sound philosophy over a long period of time.

I get WHY, and I like Smith, but it just goes against what is considered sound draft strategy.

Why else try to cover your move? Why do they have a half a project OL ranked ahead of Lloyd, Linderbaum, both Johnsons and Green? They didn't. Maybe Linderbaum.

I don't at ALL buy that they had Smith ranked ahead of Johnson and Green. He was just the last one left that could possibly start at LG this year, and they had to have that. They put themselves in that spot and it'll bite them eventually if they continue to pull that.

Clearly they had intention of trading up for 1st rd graded player, but it never materialized. All their offensive lineman had 2nd rd grades. Would be interesting to see who they would of taken if both Guards were available, still think they would of taken Smith. Yes, raw prospect, but has legitimate LT potential, which the other two did not. They were looking for more of a G/T then the Center position. Linderbaum was more of a Center only. Think the pick would of been between Green or Smith.

I agree with that as well, but you just never know.

A year ago I'd have told you that while we are fine at LG with Williams, we have an even better one in McGovern waiting to take over. Nothing to see here.

As I've said several times in this thread alone, needs change quickly.

And I'm not at all saying that the pick should have been Cine, but you make a board with rankings for a reason. Trust it.

That all said, I like Smith and I'm happy we have him. I think his upside hits and he is here for a decade with a few pro bowls on the resume.

They are just playing with fire with the strategy of skimping in FA and creating certain musts come draft time.

Smith? Not so much, but I'm actually glad they took a shot on his upside, I just hope they don't make a habit of it or adopt it as a general philosophy.

McClay's draft board is based on talent and readiness.
- He does not include position value, need, character, medical, etc. in the board.
- They evaluate those issues on draft day.
- His observation prior to getting the top talent evaluation job was that those issues we're double emphasized if they were included in the board rankings and then again evaluated on draft day.

They see Tyler Smith as a future LT which has much higher position value than Safety.

In 2017 the only player remain on their board with 1st round grade was RB Dalvin Cook.
- They didn't draft him.

I think BPA should be viewed as more of a starting point in the process and all the the other factors mentioned above are considered to make a final decision on the pick. Just because the Cowboys have a first round grade on player doesn't mean they are willing to invest their first round pick on the player.

The Cowboys had 14 players with a first round grade. Thirteen of those players went well before the Cowboy's picks so other NFL teams viewed these players as clear cut first rounders.. Cine was the one exception lasting until the end of the first round. So if you had to pick the player with the most questionable first round grade, it would probably be Cine.

I also think this draft was a little light on talent overall, which may have been a factor when picking at 24.

Especially when it makes full sense that the name Lloyd probably should have had that same grade, and went to Utah.

Here's what probably happened.....and your guess is as good as mine, and thats all it is and doesn't matter in the least.......

They took a player in the 1st round that they didn't have a first round grade on and Jerry didn't like that look. Why else get so defensive?

All in all, I dont dislike the pick or Smith, I just don't like the reasoning. They may get away with it here, but it's just not good business overall.

Nobody is talking because most fans think drafting for need is a good idea....which is exactly what this team does.

But that argument doesn’t hold water when you’ve already invested in bringing Kearse back and Collins and “holding # 52” are out the door. Cine can’t play on the OLine , a little lite . Less filling .

Jayron Kearse played lights out last season, I don’t think he gets enough credit for how much of an impact he made, Micah and Trevon got all the media attention but he low key was as good as both.

Need vs BPA isn’t a cut and dry issue….was Smith the BPA…def not…did he fill a need…yes
But the thing is…Smith was in the ballpark of being the BPA AND filled a need.
I mean say you are Kansas City with Mahomes and a top QB is the BPA but you need a WR and there’s one sitting there in your top 20 of BPA….if no one wants to trade down or you think someone below will take the guy you want…you just have to take the WR. Taking a QB would be dumb for them…like wasted pick bad…and your WR will def not be available by the time you pick again….
I appreciate discussions on draft picks immensely but lot of people talk like it’s a clear cut issue BPA vs need player and it’s not anywhere close to that. It’s closer to a chess move.

Counting on free agency to fill holes can be just as 50/50 as the draft, taking a chance on drafting is far cheaper and less impactful financially if it fails. They prefer to pay their own free agents.

I think so too. What I do know is that Cine wouldn’t have been the right pick, regardless of where they had him rated. I like Cine as a player but Kearse, Hooker and Wilson are just fine at S, with Kearse and Hooker both being better in coverage IMO.

Smith has Pro bowl potential both as an OG now and as an OT down the road. A ton more value than S.

This is being over looked by a lot of fans… or at least not being mentioned. Very good point. It is what makes him a viable candidate to start at LG from day one.
