Bucs fire Jagodzinski
Posted by Mike Florio on September 3, 2009 10:12 AM ET
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have fired offensive coordinator Jeff Jagodzinski.

The move was announced moments ago, and only minutes after we called the team's P.R. office to explore rumors that Jagodzinski would be dismissed.

More to come.

Incredible. It sounds like nobody knows what they are doing in Tampa Bay.

That said, if we don't win that game by a sizeable margin, something is wrong with the Cowboys.

whats with the obsession of firing O coordinators before the season starts? Thats 2 now.
I agree,if we dont win convincingly, somethings wrong.

That team is a mess. If we shut down a seemingly revitalized Cadillac...we win big.

If you look at the NFL website, it is showing Bill Muir as their offensive coordinator now. He was actually fired in January and joined the Chiefs IIRC.

EDIT

No Muir afterall.

The link I saw was this though, I guess it was old: http://www.nfl.com/teams/coaches?coaType=assist&team=TB

Looks like it is Olson now, supposedly in a dispute about having Leftwich as the starting QB.

Jagodzinski Dismissed
Sep 03, 2009 -

The Buccaneers announced today that they have dismissed Offensive Coordinator Jeff Jagodzinski.

Quarterbacks Coach Greg Olson has been promoted to offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach.

Jagodzinski was named the Buccaneers offensive coordinator on January 29, 2009. He came to Tampa Bay after two years (2007-2008) as the head coach at Boston College. Prior to his stint at Boston College, Jagodzinski served as the offensive coordinator for the Green Bay Packers in 2006 and spent the two seasons (2004-2005) prior to that on the staff of the Atlanta Falcons.

Olson joined the Buccaneers as quarterbacks coach in 2008 and was retained when the team promoted Raheem Morris to head coach. Olson previously served as the offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions in 2005 and the St. Louis Rams from 2006-07. He has also previously served as the quarterbacks coach for the Lions, Chicago Bears and San Francisco 49ers.

Head Coach Raheem Morris was set to address these moves at a press conference at One Buccaneer Place at 12:00 p.m. ET. That press conference will be carried live on Buccaneers.com.

These new coaches in Morris and Haley sure are picking the wrong time to uproot one of the most important coaching positions on the team.

Haley, I can understand. He could run his own offense.

Now Morris? He's now relying on Olson, who has been a failure elsewhere.

I really raise my eyebrows about some of the decisions by the new coaches in the NFL. Morris, McDaniel, Spagnuola, and Haley all have made some very questionable decisions. Two of them axing OCs this close to season kickoff is really odd.

I really hate when people say this.

This makes the case for hiring experience coaching instead of a fresh new face. Putting together a quality coaching staff is not as easy as it seems.

Yet some guys do it flawlessly. Look at Tomlin in Pitt, or Schwantz in D-town, or even Sparano in Miami.

We both know coaches have huge egos, but these guys seem to be going overboard with it.

Don't do this. Because it is wrong.

Should we win? Sure. But any given sunday... if we win 17-10 does not mean something is wrong with us.

Isn't that the guy from Boston College whose AD fired him for simply interviewing for an NFL job?

If so, that poor guy has had some tough luck the past year.

Buc fans are longing for the days of Culverhouse. I can't wait to hear the sports talk shows this afternoon. The host has been saying all summer the Bucs were going to be good and now this. What a mess!!!

True. This round of new coaches are in for a very rude awakening. Tomlin, Schwantz, Sparano did it the right way. I think there will be mass firing of coaches this year that feature the new guys. Maybe just maybe our fans will appreciate Wade a little more after this season...Yea right, who am I kidding. There will be some here that will ask the question, "Since fill in blank" is fired do you think we should replace Wade with him? :laugh2:

You're right, but we neeeed to win this game.

Always loved starting the seaaon on the road against a weaker team.

One of the issues with playing and winning on the road is a reduced work week and all the distractions of travel.

With plenty of time before the first game, that disadvantge seldom comes into play week one.

Hate it if you want, but it is true.

All things considered, we should trounce them. An inexperienced head coach in his first game with a shaken up staff and a team with significantly less talent, give me a break.

Jagz must be somewhat of a jerk. He was originally fired from Green Bay as TE coach by Sherman because he could not get along with him, fired from Boston College for applying for Jet job, and now fired from Tampa before the season starts. That is 3 firings in less than 5 yrs. Must not be a very nice guy....

Yes it does. It would mean we clearly aren't as good as believed. If we are going to be a playoff contender, we should win the game. Handily.

Can't wait until word gets out on why it happened now. Seems to be really odd timing.

The game isn't played on paper.

Last year in week 2 Pittsburgh went to Cleveland and was lucky to escape with a 10-6 win. This type of thing happens all the time.

Setting up some sort of arbitrary criteria other than "a win" beforehand is just a setup for postgame curmudgeon-ry.
