Jagodzinski "not equipped" to direct NFL offense
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on September 3, 2009 2:35 PM ET
Perhaps there is a more salacious truth out there, but the St. Petersburg Times reports that Jeff Jagodzinski is no longer the Bucs offensive coordinator for a simple reason: he wasn't ready for the job.

"Jags" had very little experience calling plays, something that Steve Logan normally did for him at Boston College. (Logan is now in Tampa as a running backs coach and will remain there.) The Bucs reportedly grew concerned that Jagodzinski knew how to install a zone blocking running scheme on the team, but not much else.

"Sometime during training camp, it became increasingly apparent to Bucs officials and players, that Jagodzinski was not equipped to install and direct an NFL offense," writes Rick Stroud.

The team reportedly believed Jagozinski lacked "sophistication" when it came to various aspects of the passing game. Coach Raheem Morris spoke about the decision Thursday.

"Coach Jag came in and I have a lot of respect for him,'' Morris said. "But we're at the point
now where we have to be more precise and we need to be more detailed and we need to have more direction to where we're going to go. And we just didn't have it right now for whatever reason. That's about as detailed as I can get on it.''

Hiring Jagodzinski was one of the first big decisions Morris made as a head coach, and it couldn't have turned out much worse. Greg Olson, now the team's coordinator, wanted the job back in January, but the team didn't even interview him.

Stroud writes that the decision to let Jagodzinski go had nothing to do with the quarterback situation; the former Boston College head coach was in Byron Leftwich's corner. Jagodzinki reportedly got along with everyone; he just wasn't ready.

In some ways, that may be worse for his future than if the firing was personal.

So it took an entire camp for them to realize he wasn't "equipped" to call plays?

Sad.

whats with the obsession of firing O coordinators before the season starts? Thats 2 now.
I agree,if we dont win convincingly, somethings wrong.

Haley is a good coach, but has childish maturity. It hardly surprised me when I heard Gailey got fired. It was an odd time to do it, but with Haley you never quite know how his temper will act out for him. And to think, this is the guy many wanted to be our HC. Holy circus, batman.

If they score more than 10 points, by your own admission, there will be no need for you to continue watching the remainder of the season. Similarly, there will be no need for your presence here. Correct?

Please, oh please don't ruin it for the rest of us.

huh? watching your team lose games is better than not watching them at all. even if the bucs did score more than 10 points, the cowboys would still win a few more games down the line.

The same Haley that sued McDonald's for $2 Million for finding a mouse in his wife's salad? Not sure about that guy at all. He seems a little, fishy.

Olson previously served as the offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions in 2005 and the St. Louis Rams from 2006-07

Time ot pick WR Roy Williams' brain about Olson's tendencies and philosophies as an offensive coach. :D

Three of them have been well chronicled, IMO, but what has Spagnuolo done that's been questionable? I'm not asking to be a ********, I just haven't been able to follow the NFL as closely this off-season.

I was about to ask the same question.
Sorry guys, I took off for a few hours right after posting that. He waived the team's leading tackler because of the man's size. How about his playing abilities? Not saying he is great, but he clearly didn't suck.

Hey guys good to see you, glad to be here, hoping for an injury free competitive game in Tampa this coming week.
I'd like to share some of the information that I've picked up on the firing of Coach Jagz in the past few days and to clear up any confusion on the subject.

The reason why it has taken to this point to fire him is because of his playcalling abilities.
In Boston college he was the head coach as everyone knows. He did not call the plays there however. He was responsible for designing plays and teaching the scheme to the players, but when it came to in-game playcalling someone else was in charge of that. I am not a Boston College fan so I am unfamiliar with their staff they had on hand at the time. As a matter of fact, he has never been a playcaller until now as far as I know.

So when he comes to Tampa and we start OTA's and training camp, everything is going swimmingly. He is teaching his new zone scheme, everything is fine and dandy. The only reason why things were going well in training camp is because the plays they practice are pre-scripted. It is no where near live game speed.

So once the preseason hit, thats when the real evaluation began. It was reported that he was not getting playcalls in fast enough. He was relaying calls to Greg Olson, who was the QB coach and is now our new OC.

Morris said he needed more precision from his offense, more detail in the playcalling so I assume he had trouble selecting plays based on down and distance.

I for one am happy that we did fire Jagz even though opening week is upon us. We saw a problem and corrected it instead of waiting until the end of the season and using that as a scape goat.

In all likelyhood this young Bucs team is not going to be a playoff contender, and everyone knows it. However they should not be underestimated and I think we will surprise a couple teams.

Heres to a great game Cowboys fans:beer2:

The Bucs now have Jim Bates as defensive coordinator. His scheme was outdated in the mid 90s and he is still running it. If Monte Kiffen was still running the defense there might be some hope for life. But Bates scheme is predicated on press coverage by the corners and a rush by the defensive ends. It is a vanilla schmene with little variation. Watch as Qbs sit back in the pocket with all day to throw while the WR are running free across the field. I bet Romo has all day to throw and is never touched.

Then on the offensive side, the Bucs have no QB. I am now underestimating the Bucs. If I picked them to go 0 and 16 that might be underestimating them. I think they will win 2 games. and how is that 60,000 waiting list for tickets coming.
