Burnett signs with San Diego...2 yr 5.5mil

They obviously have a guy that they love in the draft. Burnett has also hit his ceiling. He's nothing more than a nickel LB and they know that..they want a quality starter for coming years.

obviously?

Great, so we remove 1 average player for another one. Excellent work Jerry, you're a fine football genius.

:)

I think the thinking is maybe they'll get another guy to develop in the draft who will actually - you know - DEVELOP into a starting quality player.

Hamlin got how much?

Bang for $$$'s I'd take Burnett.

Oh and the always injured Burnett missed three games in four seasons!

I'm shocked he signed for that. Since we didn't make a strong play for KB it's obvious we were prepared to go on with out him. I really don't think he will be that hard to replace.

I don't think he will be all that hard to replace but for the price he signed for, that is some good depth.

Hes a guy who knows the system and played well enough.

cant believe that was all it wouldve taken to resign him

and we somehow couldnt offer that. i just dont get it.

I'm sure he was promised a starting spot with the Chargers. He wasn't going to get that with the Cowboys. The money could have been the same.
They may have told him that he has an opportunity to compete for a starting position, but he will not start for the Chargers. Tim Dobbins plays next to Stephen Cooper and Dobbins is a good run stuffer. However, he is stiff in pass coverage. Hopefully Burnett can help us in pass defense and special teams. If he can do that, we may be letting go of a worthless ILB in Matt Wilhelm. That guy does not make plays. Not in the run game nor in the passing game. I hope he goes!

We're back to all-even in free agents lost and signed. We need to lose at least one more, or we probably will not get a comp pick for Chris Canty next year.

This is stunning.. AND stupid.

What the hell are they thinking in Valley Ranch ? :banghead:

That he cannot stay on the field and doesn't make plays despite getting almost half the defensive snaps.

Brooking was cut i think in Jan or early Feb so he doesnt count towards comp picks.

Brooking was not cut by Atlanta, his contract voided. He will count in the comp equation unless we cut him.

5.5 million over 2 years?

Oh, I would have so been elated to pay him that and keep him here.

I am not pulling for Tank Johnson and Keith Davis to get offers.

I am greedy.

Is there anyone else? Zach?

So if Keith signs somewhere we can get a 3rd or 4th? If he doesnt we get nothing?

Pretty much.

Unless Sensabaugh signed for close to the minimum, right now we'd break even in the comp equation, with three qualifying players signed and three lost. Assuming none of them gets cut or anything, we would not get a comp pick for Chris Canty.

However, if Keith Davis or Tank Johnson or Zach Thomas signs with another team for enough money to qualify, we would get a comp pick for Canty -- almost certainly in the fourth round.

Got to figure that elimanates any NFC east teams.

What if they sign late in the season? Like Zach avoiding TC, or Keith as someones last resort after an injury mid-season?

They have to sign during the Free Agency period. If they're still free agents on June 1, we have to tender them a contract, or they won't count, either.

Apparently we view him soley as a backup and not starting caliber. If we thought he could start, he would have never reached free agency.

One thing Jerry Jones is not.....is cheap. If you can play, Jerry will give you a market deal, he is not a cheap arse like Bud Adams.

As far as the move being stupid, I have to disagree. If Wade Phillups (who has been in the NFL 30+ years) thinks Burnett cant start in the "phillups 34", I tend to believe him.

Wade might not be much of a head coach, but the guy knows more about defense than all of us on this board combined. So if he thinks Burnett is nothing more than a backup, I would tend to think he knows what he is talking about.

Dont you agree????

Wade probably has a better idea who can do what in his style of defense than you do.

Burnett was a role player here, apparently Wade and the other coaches/scouts believed thats all he was ever going to be.

He may have been average but he was definetely above average as far as covering which is where we needed him.

He also did a solid job in the 4-6.

For 5.5 I would have done that no problem if I were the Cowboys.

I absolutely don't get the love for Burnett. He's a JAG as a player and has a questionable attitude IMO.

Are you guys sure this isn't a case of overvaluing something just because you don't have it anymore?

Not to go too Dr. Phil.

I think it's because Burnett was one of ours. He was a draft pick and looking at the contract numbers, wouldn't have been expensive to keep. Not sure I agree about your thoughts on his attitude. Seemed ok to me.

It's also preferring to hold onto the known versus the unknown.

However, if the team drafts another linebacker, which I expect them to do, then we'll be back to the shiny new toy syndrome. The new guy will be a stud player right out the box.

What this tells me is that the 'boys don't have to keep every suspect player on the roster anymore. Being good enough to play, but with no more upside, used to guarantee a roster. Not anymore.
