Yeah, I know other guys have done it at his weight, but he just looks really bad against the run.

I won't argue he does get engulfed against the run.

Theo, have you watched Jeremy Leman from Illinois? He had big games against Penn St., OSU, Michigan and Wisconsin while all where ranked high this year. He's not gonna go real high, but he'll be a blood and guts ILB for some team. Kind of a 4th round AJ Hawk.

Oh yeah. That dude absolutely rocks. I saw him last weekend in the Ohio State game. AJ Hawk is a good comparison. He's kinda what I thought Carpenter would look like by now, though I'm holding out hope the light comes on and he replaces Akin next season.

Yep, that's what i though Carp would be. He was never as good as Hawk at OSU but i figured by now he'd be starting. Leman will go lower and IMO end up being better as a pro than Carp. He has a Huge heart which outweighs his 4.7 speed. Certainly has good run stopping potential in Wade's 3-4.

I think Burnett will eventually take over Ayodele's spot also. Burnett just makes plays when he's on the field. I don't think our run D would suddenly go down the tubes if we put him in Ayodele's spot anyway. It's not like Ayodele is owning the other team's running games this year anyway, he's been pretty quiet all season.

being good against the run, is also about not over-pursuing and taking yourself out of the play, Akin is doing fine for what we want, there's a reason he starts on 1st and 2nd down mostly

now youre just being a jerk. he hasnt been in on first and second down at all this season but he performed admirably against Denver and Houston in that role in the preseason. Now granted it was against second team guys but that is a point in the favor of he can perform versus the run.

What do you base his inability to play against the run? You using your high school glory days for that too or are you just guessing?

I think Burnett has been horrible, I hate the 6-7 DB defense. Rather have James and Akin in there. Burnett has not impressed me and i don’t think we can rely on him to make critical 3rd down plays.

Fuzzy, you made the point- AGAINST 2nd TEAM GUYS in the PRESEASON.
Burnett does not have the heft to play ILB on the 3-4 every down. Its not just his size but the whole package. Guys Edwards size that can play all downs in the 3-4 is VERY rare. Burnett is just not one of them. Burnett has played a lot recently do to the teams we are playing PASSING a lot. I am willing to bet that with the Jets and T Jones we will be getting a lot of running plays and Akin will be important to stopping that. So he will play a lot more then Burnett will.

He can do it against second teamers and we have yet to see him fail against first teamers. how on earth can you say with certainty that he cant?

Why should it even matter if he is a little iffy against the run? If playing Burnett means we give up slightly more rushing yards in favor of upgrading our porous pass D I'm all for it. Something needs to be done about the pass defense, and quite a few of those passes are coming on first and second down so....

I'd still like to see how the pass d performs once Newman and Henry are both starting and see how more man coverage works out but Burnett should be getting some reps on 1st and 2nd down.

Its real easy to say "slightly more rushing yds" but in reality that usually means A LOT MORE RUSHING yds. And getting blown out when it matters.
If he is not in there now then the staff has already figured that out, more then likely.

Just because he hasn't played on 1st and 2nd down doesn't mean he hasn't played against the run. And by the way, he has played on 1st and 2nd downs (e.g., when we use the nickel/dime defense on 1st and 2nd down).
