Well he kinda did say he was blind sided, he said playing in the NFL came at a regrettable cost he could not foresee ..really? You couldn't see 200 plus pound men slamming into each other at full speed could lead to long term ailments? It's ridiculous, he made that choice, he doesn't need to act like it's a surprise
yeah he didnt word it right. He knew.

I think smart people pick up that he is describing a lesson he learned, not complaining and saying he was completely blind sided
Yes, i am just dumb.

I know what he is saying. I also know what people who work on an assembly line, the military, and in the trades say about their chronic pain.

your last sentence is me. Nailed it. We live day to day, check to check...a meager means. Byron means well but ,may need a bit more perspective. I still admire him for saying it. The game aint for everyone. He had a choice and he made it.
No I agree...i think it is good that he is trying to warn the young players of the risks. Probably a better forum for that than in your retirement tweet though. Maybe the rookie symposium is a better forum.

You didn't have much choice for your chronic pain. He could have studied up on what he was having put in his body, i know i do. Some, like yourself, didn't even get the issues from the medicine, just chronic overuse.

Yeah it's going to upset some people, but I get it.

Everyone is different and dealt different circumstance and values different things.

Byron values his health over money, which honestly is not that crazy. I fall into that category nowadays.

That said, somewhere in a Parallel universe Byron Jones, Economics Professor might be regretting not declaring for the NFL Draft.
It is easy for him to say this after the fact. EVERYONE knows the risks going in. He is specifically blaming the shots he was given...which I know have the potential to cause more damage because it is like cutting the "low oil" light on your car...it doesn't fix the issue, it just doesn't let you know about it. Pain is the body's "check engine light".

I think the "No amount of chronic pain" for financial gain part rubs people the wrong way.

Everyone knows the risks of playing football. He made millions for his "sacrifice".

Average Joe gets same chronic injuries from working an assembly line or trade and doesn't have a fraction to show for it.
"Avoidable". That's the key here, from what I can tell. He's saying they(the NFL) just give you pills and injections to "keep the show going", rather than giving the body the time and treatment it needs to heal properly. Sounds sinister on the Owners parts, but pretty par for the course in the way shareholders treat their employees.

no one makes them take the medicine. Its a 2 way street. But I get it...its the NFL culture.

The implication that he should not complain about the results because he should have known that going in is kinda strange: how do young players know that going in? Only because old players like this complain!

He's clearly owning his choice. Stop pocket watching athletes. You sound like a jealous hater.
Yawn. What Jerrykid said is exactly

Please. What Jerrykid said is exactly right. These kids know EXACTLY what can happen on this job. But they play anyway for the money and the lifestyle. Then when injuries (from a violent game/job at it's very nature) take their toll its SUDDENLY the League's fault that the players weren't warned what could/ can happen. As others have said no one forces these players to play. They choose to play. And are very handsomely rewarded. I don't want to see anyone get injured but it's the nature of the beast. Otherwise get a 9-5 Monday through Friday job and be relatively pain free.

THIS IS A MOUTHFULL RIGHT HERE, players are coming out telling how they really feel, and this is how it should be!!!!!!!!

Exactly, and some of those pills sound very heavy with what they do. I wonder if there will be something new and less harmful that the players will be allowed to use.

I remember his knee going out of joint or sideways during a game, and he moved it with his hand, got up, and played.

What's going on in Miami.

The mishandling of Tua's concussions and now this.

I wonder if the NFLPA is going to be investigatating. Their owner has already been in trouble for tampering, and this is the second player that's been complaining about the training there.

to me, it sounds like he's trying to tell other players not to take injections or pills to mask the pain from injuries so they can keep playing, that in the end, it will mess do more harm to you than good.
I don't think he's crying or complaining he's trying to inform other players of the risk. shrugs.

Players like Byron are important because they’re speaking up about the issues that older athletes didn’t get the opportunity to. That’s how positive change happens to protect the players as best as possible. They’re humans like you and I on this site and it’s sad that some people can’t differentiate that from them just being entertainment to them

Thats what people should be taking away from this. This combined with Michael Thomas's comments about the NFL's medical practices should get people to ask questions. But its seems most people can't read anything into it other than him being ungrateful
