Core special teams player C.J. Goodwin announced his retirement from the NFL.

Goodwin, 36, was a free agent. He spent the past eight seasons with the Cowboys and played all 17 games last season as a special teams captain.

Goodwin told Rob Metzger of WTOV9 of his decision after his ninth annual PEGA Foundation All-Star Sports Camp.

Goodwin began his career as an undrafted free agent with the Steelers in 2014. He appeared in his first regular-season game in 2016 with the Falcons.

He appeared in 108 games with the Cowboys, playing 2,211 snaps on special teams, 62 on defense and one on offense.
Damn good career. Became a solid special teams a guy. The blueprint on how to have a successful career when you’re not starting. That’s good for someone a position that opened up.

Never really felt like it was worth a dedicated roster spot to keep a 4th specialist, especially when you keep a Fullback active every week. That said, he was pretty good at what he did. Kudos to him for earning $11m+! Should give him the opportunity to do what he wants for the rest of his life if he's smart with the money.

Am I to understand Sorenson a ST coach I wanted to walk the plank after the last game of 25 now has an even weaker overall unit ?

Thought about him the other day when we were talking about Team Captain.

Players voted him as a captain in 2025.

I just figured they’d continue to sign him to a one year deal, use him to manipulate a roster spot between final cuts and week one, then have him cover punts in a very average manner for about six times what that player ought to cost. Nice guy though I’m sure.

Off the top of my head Bill Bates and Kenny Gant were better ST Cowboys than him. I just never saw the reason to not have that spot covered by a DB or WR with some upside.

who will inherit those gunner running out of bound penalties????

Good on him. He was totally self made. Carved out a nice career .
