Caleb Downs getting return work!

I don't see him being the starting returner because he will be tired coming off defensive drives on punt returns.

My guess is it will be Turpin as the starter and the Cowboys are looking for backups for when (not if) Turpin gets dinged and he might fill that role.

Most teams focus on sure-handed backups for punt returners so that's why you see a lot of defensive backs get that role.

Oh no, that fool went the wrong way. I guess there’s a lot to learn, good thing it’s training camp.

Anthony Smith give his speed a shot in these three pre season games . Downs way too valuable on D . This is a joke .

He is excellent on returns. 2tds in college.
I don’t care if he’s the best returner in the league, if he’s even half as good as advertised on defense then he will be much more important to our team overall than he would be returning. You don’t risk putting a player like him, and that high of a draft pick, on returns. That’s coaching incompetence.

See D. Sanders. Downs is a super star player in the making. I hope they use him in certain situations.

Downs will probably be the sure-handed guy for short punts inside the 20.

They did it with Sanders.
I knew you would bring this up and it didn’t make it right. It’s still stupid to put one of your best players in a high risk situation, the juice isn’t worth the squeeze. If Sanders had suffered a major injury returning, don’t even tell me you would have supported that coaching decision. As dangerous as Sanders was, the coach would have been roasted by fans and media alike, rightfully so.

I’m not positive but I think the Giants did this a few years ago with one of their best WR’s or CB’s, guy ended up having a season ending injury IIRC and it didn’t go over well.
