California running back Marshawn Lynch

I think his football speed is fine. The guy averaged 6.6 yards per carry, and made a lot of big plays not only in the running game but passing game. 4.52 is nothing to sneeze at for a 215 lbs running back that's going to be durable enough to take hits from 250 lbs middle linebackers 20-25 times a game.

The one thing that stands out about Lynch is the first guy never brings him down.

What do great backs do for your offense?

They gain 1,500 yards running behind Kwame Harris.

There is only one position on offense, and maybe (ina singular sense) the entire team, that is more important than RB. Like IR said, this guy is touching the ball more than anyone but the QB and center.

IF San Francisco had a guy like Julius Jones behind that mess last year, they'd have struggled to win 4 games.

I think Allen is really only capable of mashing opposing d-lineman, and can't do fancy stuff like pull on sweeps and stuff like that... Frank Gore is the dude for that style of play (although he can take it outside), and so is Larry. The cowboys drafted JJ, and he seems best suited for sweeps and the cutbacking. Larry Allen's were/are too slow to do that. It is like putting a square peg in a round hole. I would have kept Allen, forget JJ; damn that would have been sexay to have Leonard Davis and Larry Allen mashing the strong-side like Steve Hutchinson and Walter Jones (although I know they plaed the left side, but still) damnit!

You are aware that Larry Allen ran a 4.6 40 at 325lbs right? In his rookie season Aikman threw an INT to LBer Darion Conner of the Saints and it was all 325lbs of Larry Allen who chased him him down about 40 yards after the INT to tackle him at the 15 yard line. I think you are thoroughly confused about Larry Allen's ability to run.

Running is not the equal of lateral movement.

Even if Larry hasn't lost much of his top end speed (I'd say it's likely he has) the guy struggles moving side to side. Bringing something up from a decade ago doesn't really disprove that.

guess it depends on what you think a "wow" player is...Lynch looks like a good but no better than average prospect and is certainly not a sure thign to be any kind of improvement over what we have...now Adrian Peterson is a differenct story

David

Why is Peterson a different story aside from the usual UT/OU homerism that exists on this board?

Larry is a guard not a tackle. Lateral movement isn't near as important to a guard. Pulling doesn't require extreme lateral movement the way a tackle must for protecting speed rushers off the end.

I thought the thread was about taking Lynch at 22, not Larry Allen. :D

I don't care how much it requires - the anecdote about him chasing a guy ten years ago is irrelevent. The guy has almost NO lateral quickness anymore. He's a whiff machine in the open field. That's the point - not chasing down defenders.

Gore excelled because he is a freak of a back. That line is crap.

Wasn't it you that I was arguing with early in the season and I was telling you how good Gore was? :) ;) :D

No. You were saying something different and unfounded. I knew he could be good, but I didn't expect he'd be that good.

As it stands, if either Lynch or PEterson drops a little, we need to get them. The second most important position on the field can't afford Julius' mediocrity anymore, if we have the option.

I'm all over Peterson, I'm not sold on Lynch.

Man ,

That is some good highlights. He seems big and can carry people with him. Looks like bigger Marion barber. Don't know about the speed though. Julius' big problem is he falls down for even arm tackles.

Is he worth trading up ?

Gore is better than Julius. He's proved that.

But he hadn't, until this year was concluded. So you're still wrong about that, although right about his potential.

I can agree with that. Except it didn't take much to prove he was better than Jones...

Trade up to mid-teens for a late 2nd or trade for JJ.

This guy will have a longer and more productive career than AD....... book it.
