Can anyone give examples of how Garrett improved his playcalling?

It's easy to be balanced when everything works!

Oline dominated from the start. I loved watching/hearing Holland (!) point at rushers then push his guy two yards back on running plays.

My favorite thing about Murray is that he hits the hole so much faster than Barber did. Its hard to compare him to Felix, since he runs so many draws and sweeps. But Murray gives himself and his line every chance to make positive yardage and that head of steam allows him to bounce outside run through inside creases and not just holes.

He's handed it off to Murray down there before. The difference this week is we got it blocked enough to score.

It's not just a fact it's a run play but the type of the run.

Pretty much this. Coupled with him trusting Tony to make throws down the field and trusting Dez to beat his man on the bomb.

Moreso than anything, though, we forced Buffalo to respect the run and used the run to set up the pass. Offensive line played great and kept Tony upright.

Now that our offensive line is starting to get things going on the ground, I suspect we'll see a lot less offensive woes. We're going to be amazing next year when we draft Peter Konz.

He didn't give up on the run today. He tried to stay balanced.

He's gone to more of a zone scheme. Earlier in the year he was forcing power runs (something our team can't do).

He didn't get overly cute in the redzone.

Biggest thing in his favor though was the scoring from big plays.

Garretts weaknesses have never really been between the 20's.

Garrett always TRIES to stay balanced, our problem has been that with poor run blocking, we were forced to pass. That is also the reason he gets "cute" in the redzone, as the players were not giving him reason to be confident in them to line up and get the job done.

Didn't see much zone blocking today either. Even on our outside runs, they looked man. Although some runs I couldn't tell on first glance if the cutback was a designed zone run, so you very well may be right.

You're spot on about big scoring plays though, no argument there.

I've always thought Garrett did a good job of playcalling.

I think he does a great job of playcalling.

In fact, I think he's one of the best playcallers in the entire league.

Now does that mean I don't second guess some calls? Of course not. I can do that with anybody. But he's consistently moved the football regardless of personnel since he's been here.

Haha I would agree with that, but there are times where Garrett has some head scratchers.

I just think they are few and far between, and many of them overly exaggerated.

Cas, I'm not so sure about this one. I've talked a bit about on the draftzone forum. Konz has had a pulmonary embolism (blood clot usually developed in one of the leg veins which becomes dislodged and thrown off into the heart and then onto the lungs). There is a rumour he has a hereditary condition that predisposes him to this. The issue is not the lung damage it causes. Rather the issue is that if he has a recurrence he will likely require lifelong bloodthinners (coumadin/warfarin) which would prevent him from playing football again. It is a sizeable medical risk that might push him out of the top 2 rounds. I'd actually suggest not drafting him before the 4th round just on that basis.

The issue also is that if he develops a clot in the middle of the season he will be gone the rest of the year - usually you need 6 months of blood thinners as a minimum. This poses a risk of continuity on the OL and having to play your backup Center.

I'm not sure how it'll all play out once all the teams have their hematologists sort the situation out.

I'd rather us just draft someone else and avoid that risk.

Garrett called an excellent game today no doubt. And exection was excellent as well. But it doesn't mean he has called all good games this year because he called a great game today.

Just like it doesn't mean Romo has played all great games this year because he was great today.

Many of you guys are ridiculous honestly. Its one camp against the other. Neither side is willing to objectively admit that their guy was off for a game or a group of games.

Clearly, there has been execution problems this year. I think unbiased people would probably say that clearly there have been some play calling question marks this year. And there has, at times, been some questionable QB play.

Fortunately for me, since I am a fan or the team, play calling, execution and QB play was superb today which led to a big win.

Lets keep it up on all counts.

Zone scheme is making a big difference too.

You can get holes in a zone scheme just from defenders naturally taking themselves out of the play.

When you stretch the ball out wide like that it makes holes. There is really no right move the defender can make and Murray is a specialist at running in a zone scheme.

Im just glad Washington didn't get him and im glad Garrett has finally shifted to a style that fits his players.

Yes, for a power guy Barber used to dance a lot in the backfield.

He also is great at bouncing plays outside with his 4.38 speed. Felix gets to full-speed faster but Murray just gets the corner at will on those plays.

I don't care if they haven't gave him confidence or not you still have to try to jam the ball in. Especially on 1st down. If you do it 3 times and they don't score I can live with it.

If you don't get a yard in 3 tries than you don't deserve to score.

Garrett doesn't have that mentality. It fails once and it's back to good old shotgun the next play.

These 2 are going to compliment each other very well. I can't wait to see Felix back out there and going.

If we don't get Konz whom I like, I would not be be mad @ DeCastro (Stanford) or Brewster OSU.

Here are some simple changes in play calling I noticed and liked in this game:

1. Ran the ball in the 2nd half, compared to Detroit game, where we kept airing it out
2. Ran the ball on 1st and goal from the 1, instead of calling pass plays
3. Took shots down the field and came out aggressive, compared to NE game where we came out tentative and tried to run too much against their weak pass D.

Very smart game plan and play calling today no doubt.

Just curious. We won the game 44-7, so it must be because the play calls have changed dramatically, since Garrett has been doing such a poor job this season.

Or perhaps, our execution level today was phenomenal. Our run blocking was great, and Romo had time in the pocket. It's as simple as that.

80% of the time, the gripes with playcalling are a joke.

He stayed, for the most part, in versatile formations. He didn't tip his hand, for the most part.

The only problems today were, IMHO, a little too much shotgun to start the 3rd (I think that's when it was), and the terrible screen calls after a turnover with a huge lead...as if Buffalo was going to be blitzing the passer when the running game is working and we have a huge lead going into the 4th.

I could be wrong, but it looked like we ran the exact formations we've ran every game.

I'll be sure to check Bob Sturm's page on decoding Garrett, and compare them to games past.

When he has a productive running game, he'll maintain the balance. When he doesn't, he's not going to keep running into a wall and waste half his snaps.

I don't know why this concept is so foreign to some people.

This reply should be stickied and posted at the top of the board for all eternity.

Simple, concise, effective, and truthful. Well said.

This can be debated. It is an opinion, others will differ in their opinion.

I don't even know if our run blocking has improved that much.

Murray is THAT good. He's making runs out of nothing.

I'd say the improved run game is due to:

1. Murray
2. Fiametta

then at 3 I'd put the OL blocking better as a unit.

I liked the play-calling today except for one drive where everyone on here was like "What the..."

It wasn't all about execution, the play-calls themselves were better. We got down inside the 10 and he didn't have what I would call a "cute" play.

To say that the play-calling wasn't "different" inside the 20 can't see the the tree that is about to hit them.

It's not only people on here that have been questioning his play-calling, but former coaches and players have also done it. So don't act like it's just fans on here that question it.

Every coach has their little pecidilos, I just hope that JG learns from his and begins to get some confidence in his running game.

I think that if he could take back his play-calling last week from 1st and goal from the 18 inch line last week, he would.
