It will cost us about 10 million to put RW on the 53. It will cost 9.5 million to not put him on the 53. You do the math. He's not being cut. He may get benched if he doesn't get it together but that's not already been written.

Yeah. The issue isn't about making the team, it's more about playing time.

It'd be preferable if Williams were playing great, of course. But if he isn't and doesn't, it'll be interesting to see how much playing time he does get.

So let's say he has a mediocre preseason. Do the Cowboys continue to limit his snaps (as they did at the end of last season), or does Williams get most of the snaps early in the season, in hopes that he'll turn things around?

Last time I checked, Sam Hurd was at the bottom of the depth chart. If we bring in a new receiver which I am all for then he is the one that would and should get cut.
Why you gotta go making sense like that mang? You know it hurts people's heads and feelings all at the same time.

It's 9.5 mil down the drain no matter how you look at it. At least by cutting him you open a space for a more productive player. I swear it looked like we were playing with 10 people on offense with RW in there!

Olgtree kind of passed him up at the end of the year from a business sense and a football sense Dallas will probably not even tender Hurd he was on his way out when Olgtree showed up he was the 4th wr he will cost a lot more jack to keep so Olgtree moves to the 4th spot and they pick up a late round wr if their is one on their board or a rookie FA wr or Manuel Johnson etc as the 5th wr to play special teams and develop at a fraction of the cost of Hurd.

How do you know?

BTW we are not cutting Williams. It simply won't happen.

Once again, a thread of people who make the fatal error of believing that salary is directly proportional to 1000+ yard/10+ TD seasons.

I am thinking that $25,000 of that money is being paid for him to keep wearing that stupid green Texas hat.

IMO he's already proven himself to be a good NFL wr. The guy didn't put up two big years in Detroit of all places by accident. He just needs to get on the same page with Tony...I know it sounds repetitive but I really believe it takes a while for two guys like that to gain confidence in each other.

It's looking more and more like that 1,300+ yard season was a fluke.

More a byproduct of the Detroit offense being predicated on the pass.

Roy L Williams had a couple great years too...

It's kind of ironic how both Roys went downhill once they reached 27 years old.

I'm not advocating cutting Roy, but what people are missing is how the brain ignores the idea of "sunk costs". Roy is getting his check for $9.5M in March whether they keep him or not. That money is spent.

The question is whether or not the Cowboys will be a better team with or without him. Saying JJ 100% won't cut him because of the contract may be 100% correct, but it doesn't answer the question. If Roy is better than all the other options they should keep him, if they have an equal replacement in Ogletree or Hurd, they should trade him(which should be easy since they are paying him) and if they have 3 or more better Wrs and can't find a trade they should cut him.

I agree witht this.

Something else to consider. Now I hate making excusses for anyone. Especially a player like Williams whom I'm so down on. But he did have a couple of injuries this past year.

First he bangs up the shoulder in camp, than he breaks a few ribs. You'd like your players to have the mental toughness to play through that ****. Well Roy aint got that and never will.

But I still don't think its a stretch that we could see an exceptable level of play from him this year provided he remains healthy.

RW goes for 900-1000+ yards this year if he stays healthy. That's not worth the money they are paying him, but it is plenty good when Austin could go for 1300-1400+.

If he does not produce then next season will be the season of reckoning for Roy.

No worries LatinMind. Ogletree will get to show what he has in TC and preseason. If he's making plays, the coaching staff, and even ol' Jerry will make sure Ogletree is playing.

in my post i said they probably wont cut him. and thats whats wrong with the team. holding back the growth of younger players because of somebody elses salary.

And what has Ogletree really proven...looks good, good potential...run 1 route, did not impress me on KO returns.....he needs another year to learn.

RW is not going to be released, especially for an unproven 2nd year WR.

Not knocking Ogletree, but just trying to be realistic. I hope and want him to succeed. He does look pretty good when he was in there. But he needs more time.

well you can say that 10,000 times but that won't make it true.

did jones overpay? sure. i didn't like the deal when we did it and don't like it now. the only thing i hate more about the deal is everyone having to beat the holy dustturds out of this topic coupled with dogging on the old "ego" crutch to help push a dead argument through.

how is he slowing the progress of a FA WR? how many years did it take austin to go from "maybe" to "success" and how many "maybes" didn't make it? just beause we have a young "hope" for the future doesn't mean they will pan out and it also doesn't mean we should rush them into a level they're simply not ready for simply because you needed more bullet points for a foolish argument.

take Roy Williams strenghts and Tony Romo weaknesses or vice versa and you get a duo that may not ever work... But it will be funny to see them try for another season!

you put Roy Williams with Joe Flacco or Mark Sanchez and he becomes the 1000yrd 10TD WR.
