I think he'll get a 3 year extension somewhere slightly above the range that Colombo received. That's really not much, and it's actually protecting an investment in the future considering he'll play a year or two extra, giving Doug Free some time to develop.

I can actually see him playing hardball if we don't have a clear heir apparent though. If he is healthy, someone will pay him. I can think of a dozen teams who would take him right now, no questions asked. There are lesser players, like John Tait, who received nice contracts.

It is not an easy situation given how crucial the position is.

I just can't think of any 33 year old LTs with knee problems that have received very large contracts in the recent past? I can remember, however, several tackles that have hit the market and been paid relatively mild contracts. He's not in his prime (and certainly won't be by year 2 or 3 of the contract), so I see absolutely no reason that a team would pay him anything of note.

The position is crucial, but he isn't a healthy 28 year old.

If he backs into a Pro Bowl again, all of that could change.

NFL GMs aren't that stupid. Only fans consider making the Pro Bowl a judge of talent.

He made it in '06 off of name alone. No one with half a brain would say that he had a great year in '06.

So why are performance incentives sometimes tied to it?

Why would Jerry Jones note that in glowing terms when speaking about Tony Romo?

We all sometimes forget that GMs and brass think just like "we" do sometimes.

Well, some of us, at least.

Tiny little meaningless incentives may be tied to them. All sorts of little non-sensical things happen when negotiating the fringes of a contract.

Your point is well taken, however. My opinion was based on the assumption that all GMs are rational human beings. That's far from the truth.

I'm with Alex. I think Flo would auction himself off to the highest bidder. I don't think he's interested in any two or three year extension with us. Just a hunch.

I keep coming back to something Ryan Young said once about "Flozell... Flozell has a lot of things other than football going on in his life." He never explained what he meant by that, but it didn't sound very good.

I dunno, I think Flozell gets bashed too much, because he's been a pretty reliable LT for a second round pick. But I'd also be reluctant to give him a ton of money, and definitely at his age.

If we start rewarding aging players with nice contracts to reward them out of loyalty, we will be edging closer to breaking even.
That really didn't work out so well for us in the 90's that is for sure. That lead us from at least breaking even to successive 5-11 seasons.

if either mcQ or Free is seen as capable then no way he sticks around.

The emergence of Pat McQuistan is comforting. I think he will be the guy. It is nice to have Free's potential as well. Competition is nice.

Adams is gone after this year. Adams' play could be the key to our season. I think it wll be. (Hamlin and Adams) I hope we send him out in style.
