Can Demarcus Lawrence be our version of JPP?

I'm pretty leery of Lawrence, to tell the truth the guy we drafted-Russell is almost as exciting to me as he is. The JPP comparo, I don't see at all.

I think the defensive line is going to scare people this year. It'll be like last year on offense instead.

We'll start out the first three weeks doing something like leading the league in sacks, and people will be like "wait a minute?"

I wouldn't put him at JPP status just yet, but his arrow is pointing up as JPP's is pointing down.

Considering JPP's recent injury, I would say Lawrence is better than JPP will be this year. But I just don't see him at JPP's level (in his prime) just yet. I have to see it on the field first. What I will say is that I think Lawrence can exceed what JPP was in the very near future. And that's a very, very good thing.

He certainly is built like him, and it be very nice if we get him too become what JPP was for them.

JPPs prime was pretty short lived.

JPPs prime was pretty short lived.

True.

JPP excelled when the supporting cast around him was at or near the same level as him. As the Giants' supporting cast digressed, so did JPP.

I'm excited for Lawrence as we're putting pieces around him that will require double teams and allow him to become more of a play maker. He has a year under his belt. He's going to be more rested. And he's going to be in a huddle that is going to be flat out pumped because of all the big plays the Cowboys are going to be making this year. And being pumped up on fresh legs with a better understanding of what he's doing out there is going to make a big difference this year.

No way. JPP was a physical freak and a quick twitch athlete like Dez is. Lawrence is going to be a strong run defender with some true upside as a pass rusher. He however doesn't have the physical makeup that JPP has. Now in the long run Lawrence it going to be a solid end who will do well in this league. I see him more as a Greg Ellis type and that ain't bad at all.

If your DE has to run 40 yards in a straight line on the field something has gone horribly wrong.

I can't think of too many things less important to a DE than 40 times. I can see how the three cone drill would be a much better indicator of what a DE can do on the field.

If Gregory and DLaw combine for 8-10 sacks, most of us will be thrilled.

Even 16 sacks, while a great stat, is one play per game. I love sacks, but what I really want to see is more consistent pressure; I want someone to bring the heat, move the QB off his mark and change passing windows even if the number of sacks are not there. I also want an athletic guy who bats balls down. If the combination of Lawrence, Gregory, Mincy, and others can produce that, I'll be happy.

Given the offseason news and photos of Demarcus Lawrence and his physical transformation, he's starting to remind me of the Giants defensive end (minus the nonsense!).

I see a lot of similarities between the two players. Both were small school transfers and both amassed nearly identical college sacks numbers. (30 for Lawrence and 31 for JPP).

Pierre-Paul is longer at 6'5" to 6'3" with a 34 3/4in arm length for JPP, 33 3/4in for Lawrence, while Lawrence is stronger - 19 reps for JPP with 20 for Lawrence. And if offseason reports are accurate, I would expect Lawrence's strength to have increased significantly.

40 yard dash comparisons place both very close - 4.67 reported for Pierre-Paul and 4.69 reported for Lawrence.

This post is in no way saying Lawrence is in Pierre-Paul's proven class yet, only that with continued work and progress, perhaps he could be.

And minus the off-the-field nonsense, that would be a nice place for both him and the Cowboys to be.

Let's hope he is nothing like JPP and continues to keep all of his fingers.

I don't care what each did at the combine, JPP is definately stronger than Lawrence. Maybe Lawrence closed the gap the offseason and maybe JPP will never be the same after the injury, but JPP has pushed around really powerful LTs like Tyron Smith and Trent Williams too many times for me to believe his 19 reps is an indicator of how strong he is now

Everyone gets caught up on bench press. Converting speed to power is based more on your legs than arms.

All i know was the jump he made at Stafford from like 5' away and then recovering the fumble was a thing of beauty. It was clutch and at the right time of the game, isn't that what we have always wanted?

He doesn't have JPP's burst. I'm excited about him, though.

This
Stop the run consistently
Pressure and hit the QB and make him move his feet consistently

That is what I want from this D

It remains to be seen whether Lawrence is as explosive as Pierre-Paul, but one positive sign with Lawrence was his bounce back against the Lions after fumbling the ball away. He didn't point any fingers, and made the play to save the game.

The Giants seem to be taking a hands off approach with Pierre-Paul, not a good situation. With Hardy facing the suspension, it will be all hands on deck for the Cowboy DL to make up for his absence. I can't put my finger on it, but I think that Lawrence will be a big part of that.

With some sleight of hand, perhaps guys like Hayden and Bishop can emerge.
