There are a lot of question marks surrounding this guy, but I want to focus on his playing weight a bit.

Does anyone think this guy can be an innovative, situational type pass rusher at 235lbs?

Personally, I'm starting to warm up to the idea due to where he was drafted-- great talent, but not great opportunity cost, so limited role may be okay.

Take for instance, undersized pass rushersike Von Miller and Bruce Irvin-- hybrid type guys that can get after the QB. Could that be Gregory?

What do you guys think?

He said on the Cowboys Draft show he plans to get his weight up, around 245-250lbs. Anyways, he will prob only play on passing downs. Not used as a runs stopper.

Yeah that's kind of what I was getting at. Could he play at 235 and be effective, or even innovative/game changing at 235?

I wasn't a huge fan of Gregory going in, but he sure does use his length well. He plays with impressive lean. I think if he get his weight up around 250, and we use him situationally like we probably will his rookie season, he'll be effective for us.

I would open to using him like a Von Miller type of linebacker. Let him play at his comfort weight. Therefore we can get D. Lawrence, Hardy and him at the same time rushing the passer. I believe he will cause problems being a situational rushing linebacker playing alongside Hardy (once he returns). He is agile and quick enough to be a linebacker. Plus I heard that he actually cover. Leave him as he is and use him situationally as a passrushing linebacker. I think that would be more effective for him and for our team.

Robert Mathis has been playing at about 240 or so most of his career. And he played as a strong side DE when Freeney was with the Colts.

His weight is the last thing I worry about. Haley was a terror for us and the Niners at 245lbs.

His bi-polar issues and or the pot issue are primary concerns.

Haley was drafted 30 years ago and last played for the Cowboys when Bill Clinton was still in his first term.

OLs are bigger now.

I don't disagree that Gregory can be an effective pass rusher at a low weight, however, I do question whether he can be an every-down 4-3 DE at that weight. The good news is they don't need him to be a every-down DE in 2015.

Bet ya' if we did a secret survey of starting 4-3 DEs I the NFL, we might be surprised how light some are.

Definitely going to need to put on some weight at the Pro level. I'd be dumping double scoops of potatoes on his tray in the chow line.

He's up to 250 now. He will probably play around 250. He can play all 3 downs at this weight and be fine, but he won't have to with the rotation we will have.

If he's 245-250 I would love if he could contribute on running downs. The dude is a beast in the running game too, something that people sometimes don't realize because of his size and the fact that he's such a good pass rusher. I guess a lot of folks assume he can't play the run because of his build... But he plays with more strength than most at his size... Very rarely got overpowered in college. Yeah I know, that was college, but still a good sign and better than the alternative.

I'd post the YouTube link to a great breakdown of Gregory's playing, including against the run, but it's already in a few other threads.

Sturm:

Does he fit the scheme perfectly? No. But, 2 things. 1) One source from the Cowboys told me to expect him to be up to 255 by camp, as they have plans to get him away from that curious sub-240 he has been walking around at and 2) scheme fit is vital, but coaches are able to figure things out where to use talents within a scheme.

And at the very, very worse, on passing downs, putting him on one edge and DeMarcus Lawrence on the other edge with Tyrone Crawford and Jeremy Mincey inside looks like a pretty capable 4 man rush to get to the QB. Put another way, I don’t think the Cowboys could have had a better top 2 picks than they did.

To get Jones and Gregory from this draft seems like injecting the blue chips into the defense as the plan was. A+.
