Probably the most under-the-radar move for the Cowboys this offseason was the signing of linebacker Jasper Brinkley. But let me preface the signing by saying this; he’s an average football player. But before you jump all over me for writing about an average player, let me remind you that Cameron Lawrence, Keith Smith and Kyle Wilber were playing meaningful snaps at linebacker late in the year.

As you can see, Brinkley is not only the oldest linebacker on the team, but also one of the least athletic. It’s also important to note that Brinkley’s measurements were taken seven years ago and his athletic ability has decreased considerably. However, Brinkley has never relied on his athleticism to survive at linebacker. Instead, he can have a major impact in the running game if put into the right role.

Got a logjam there -- Brinkley may still be the odd man out, probably just not as much upside.

Yes. He is good depth and will be the main backup to Ro. Hichens will start at strong and play nickel with Lee.

With $2 million guaranteed on his deal, I think he's a lock to make the team. And I think he provides a great insurance policy for McClain in the middle.

Reports say he looked even better than advertised in OTA's and minicamp where he got a lot of the work.

They forgot Cam Lawrence....:muttley:....and the others....they have only 12 LB's on the roster now, down from 17. LOL.

Last spot if they keep 7, will go between Rivers and Wilbur. I think it's time Wilber is replaced though, he has not impressed me at all, but he has been moved around a lot. Maybe rivers shows why he was a high draft pick.
Wilson will make it if he shows anything in TC, for being a 4th round pick.
Nzeocha go to PS or PUP, possibly to IR depending his recovery from his college injury [I still think they could have got him as a FA].
Lawrence may make it on his ST's play unless another LB steps up, which is possible from Gachkar. Lawrence is a liability at LB play IMO.

If they only go with 6 since some can play multiple LB spots, they will use that 7th to go long at DL or OL.

Dallas hopes not. He's the backup plan if Ro goes rogue.

Brinkley is what he is, which is a stopgap player who will have a role on what we hope will be a very solid defense. People look at his athleticism and say he might not make the team, but if they could measure toughness and ability to stop a runner on a dime or take on a pulling guard... he would look a lot better.

The guy is a tough, hard-nosed player who will be able to step in on running downs to relieve Rolando. Maybe not a combine hero but he's a solid football player if you get him off the field in the nickle/dime packages.

IOW, Brinkley is a guy that Marinelli can use very well to play his type of rotational, situation defense.

They played Nickel 66% of the snaps last year. That leaves 34% in base. If something happened to RoMc then Brinkley's snaps as a starter would be a max of about 34%.

They're likely not going to run the true Tampa-2 with him in the game, but they didn't run it much last year anyway.

Gachkar is the LB that I'm curious about. I've only seen him in 1 game.

It's a passing league, so one dimensional guys like him are going the way of the do do bird. I think he's a good signing for what he is, a situational backup with some starting experience. I wasn't really comfortable with him being the starter before the resigned Ro-Mac, but he fills a role now.

Let's hope we don't have to see him on the field much. Does he play special teams?

Never realized how small Lee was. What were they doing playing him at MLB? Especially considering his fragility.

He has played ST, but I don't know how well or how often.

Yeah, you would think that the guarantee will keep him around; Eberflus must like what he sees.

Gach is a baller, and should make it on his ST abilities, smarts, and motor.

Damien is a keeper, and already polished and durable; will be difficult to risk losing him on the PS.

Zow is gifted with surprising measurables, but he has some learning to do, and should end up on the PS.

So, I agree that the most likely final-spot battle should come down to Rivers and Wilber. Could be surprised by TC, but we'll see.

I had it coming down to the same thing, Wilber vs Rivers, with Wilber getting the nod because of factors like youth and experience in the defense.

I include Nzeocha in that race. It's mainly going to be a STs spot.
