Can the Cowboys keep Miles Austin?

As a Titan fan I'm really interested in Miles Austin in the offseason. I think he was really starting to emerge and his going to be a restricted free agent. With the contract extensions given to Crayton and Roy Williams there is no way Austin gets more than the minimum tender, right?

I also don't think there is anyway Jerry lets TO go.

If we let Miles go I think our fan base would storm Jerry's offices.

Very doubtful Austin is let go. He is basically the only return man we have and makes plays on offense.

Felix Jones is the return man. and how is Austin gonna get on the field with the other 3 WRs?

I see no way Dallas gives Austin anything more than the minimum tender.

It won't cost very much to give him a 2nd round tender offer so if you're willing to part with the pick, I'd say you can have him.

There is no such thing as a 2nd round tender.

He either gets the minimum tender, a 1st round tender or the highest tender for a 1st and 3rd.

Austin is a RFA, so we can qualify him at a high enough level to warrant getting quality a draft pick in return, even though he was not drafted himself. We could qualify him at a level to get a 2nd rd pick in return (a little over a million) or even as high as a 1st.

I know they redid the rules a little last yr in terms of the compensation, maybe somebody can post. It used to be you could qualify at a low tender (comp was draft pick in same rd) or mid level (1st) or a high level (1st and 3rd). But I believe they added another level where there was a 2nd rd pick as set compensation.

I think he's a safe bet to be qualified at a pretty high level, especially with Owens situation. If Owens isnt gone this yr, he almost certainly will be after the 2009 season.

Austin was taking snaps away from Crayton as the #3 before he got hurt.

We dont know how Felix Jones will be next yr, but if he is 100% healthy his role is so important to the offense that he might not return kicks, and if he does it might not be FT.

Austin is not only a very good kick returner, but he has developed nicely as a WR and has something our other WR's lack, big time speed. It's extremely doubtful they let him get away. Especially considering Owens is likely in his last yr here or may be let go altogether before 2009.

I heard Jerry Jones flat out say there is no way they can cut TO before next year. He said the cap hit would prevent them from being able to extend Ware.

That is what he said, but we know things change with him.

Plus you can always wait till after June 1 to do it and it minimizes the hit this yr.

That said, Owens at best is probably here for 2009 and then gone.

Sorry, but Austin's not going anywhere. If you're looking for depth, you may have a shot at either Hurd or Stanback though.

How is Lavelle Hawkins looking for you guys? I thought he had a decent preseason but haven't heard from him much during the regular season. Has he been dressing?
