Last night:
- the kick off, special teams knew what to do when that ball came up short
- special teams came through a second time when Harris left the punt return to cover the uncovered Eagle. Everybody thought the Cowboys screwed that up. They did but actually, it was a better football play by Harris covering that free player.
- winning all their road games.
- the challenges.
- team is very close like a brotherhood.
- the all speak the same language.
- very disciplined.
- the way they are progressively getting better.
I don't know how far this can go, but each week is going to be a new challenge and will reveal more about the team and the coaches.
Great thread, Sportsbabe. I agree with you that Garrett has changed the face and the Spirit of the Cowboys' Game. I was never a Garrett supporter, but this passed preseason I started noticing something that I hadn't seen before. And it just seems that practically week after week, he is really starting to progress into something that actually "looks" like a Head Coach who is leading his team. His cool confidence is improving constantly, his answers to the press are becoming more abstract thought and less rote memory and political, and last night he just looked like a Coach who had so much confidence in his team, before it even started he already looked like they had won. He knew his Boyz would play their guts out on that field.
He still has a ways to go in learning and does still trip sometimes, but I'll be damned....he is actually doing this. I give him major props for continuing to stick to the grind and make a Real Team out of a bunch of guys that just haven't seemed like a team unit in a long while. I think that shedding the OC spot has been a major contributor in him being able to step up and take charge. I think in a few years he will be a Coach among Coaches, one to really be respected and admired by up and coming coaches and coach hopefuls. I am very proud of Jason Garrett this year. He really deserves the praises he is getting.
Somewhere you mentioned that you would be excited to see Tony Romo coaching with Garrett when he retires, it may be in this thread. I agree with you 100%. As I was watching his presser today on DC.com, it did feel almost like I was watching a coach. I have often hoped over the years that when Tony retires he will be a coach, rather than a professional golfer, I think as a coach he would be great. Witten is another one. He has got to be a coach for us when he retires. But only for us. No one else.
