Can We Discuss The Job Jason Has Done With This Team

Last night:

  • the kick off, special teams knew what to do when that ball came up short
  • special teams came through a second time when Harris left the punt return to cover the uncovered Eagle. Everybody thought the Cowboys screwed that up. They did but actually, it was a better football play by Harris covering that free player.
  • winning all their road games.
  • the challenges.
  • team is very close like a brotherhood.
  • the all speak the same language.
  • very disciplined.
  • the way they are progressively getting better.
I don't know how far this can go, but each week is going to be a new challenge and will reveal more about the team and the coaches.

Garrett is doing better this season but he still has a long way to go to get me to jump on his bandwagon. If and only if we win playoff game will I sing his praises.

It's obvious at this point that Garrett has established himself as a leader. Just watch the way the team reacts to him. Their body language, the things they say. They believe in him, and dare I say- his "process".

It's also apparent that there's a closeness amongst the players. They're selfless, caring only about getting the win. They play for each other, not for themselves.

This team has the right mentality, and goes about their business the right way. Garrett deserves credit for that.

Many fans had VERY low expectations coming into week 1. Some thought a sub .500 season was a definite and Garrett getting canned would be a foregone conclusion. I ask those same folks, please give credit where credit is due.

He had a vision for how he wanted the team to be built and he has the rebuild well in progress.

The biggest indicator of his growing success as head coach, though, is that his team fights and fights hard every game. The players have completely bought what he is selling.

One of these days in the not too distant future Dallas will need a new starting QB, likely a draft pick. I think Garrett will be a great coach and mentor to mold a young, learning QB.

I can see Tony working with Jason after he hangs its up. After the Philly game, all he wanted to do was talk X's & O's in every interview he did last night. He had to stop himself and apologize to the NBC lady conducting the post game. But when he got to the podium he was in full professor mode like I've never heard before. He was definitely excited about how they picked them apart last night:starspin:

He did well last nigh and I'll be more than glad to give him props for it but there was also the Washington game where we had no business of losing.

Let's see how the rest of the season turn out before anointing him. He won two more games than last year, which is good but still the job isn't finished yet.

Job is definitely not done yet, but with this defense it's a minor miracle that we have won 10 games. He really should be in the running for coach of the year. No one this year, not even Jerry was counting on much this year. We have played way way better than what was expected of us, and with a QB with a broken back no less. Man if we had a dominant defense this would be our year for sure.

Emphasis on "last night" and "progressively getting better". They are far from perfect, but I like the direction we're pointing.

Well that seems completely arbitrary.

Well being that I believe we should have made the playoffs the last three years and I blame Garrett for us not making it, the only thing that will make me happy is a playoff win. I do admit he has done a better job so far this year but after three seasons of spinning our wheels I expect more than just an above .500 record and a playoff appearance. I want playoff success. and if we only win one this year I will expect more than that next year.

As coach Garret takes his fair share of the blame.

But at what point so you admit that those teams from the last 3 years just weren't that good?

They were absolutely good enough to make the playoffs. When the coach cost the team an average of two games a season with clock/game management issues and the team only needed one more win to make the playoffs and the coach can't motivate the team to win "win or go home" games against division rivals to end the season for three seasons in a row????? I never said they were superbowl caliber but given they should have made the playoffs with better coaching three years running, then I expect them to have playoff success and no less this year.

Great thread, Sportsbabe. I agree with you that Garrett has changed the face and the Spirit of the Cowboys' Game. I was never a Garrett supporter, but this passed preseason I started noticing something that I hadn't seen before. And it just seems that practically week after week, he is really starting to progress into something that actually "looks" like a Head Coach who is leading his team. His cool confidence is improving constantly, his answers to the press are becoming more abstract thought and less rote memory and political, and last night he just looked like a Coach who had so much confidence in his team, before it even started he already looked like they had won. He knew his Boyz would play their guts out on that field.

He still has a ways to go in learning and does still trip sometimes, but I'll be damned....he is actually doing this. I give him major props for continuing to stick to the grind and make a Real Team out of a bunch of guys that just haven't seemed like a team unit in a long while. I think that shedding the OC spot has been a major contributor in him being able to step up and take charge. I think in a few years he will be a Coach among Coaches, one to really be respected and admired by up and coming coaches and coach hopefuls. I am very proud of Jason Garrett this year. He really deserves the praises he is getting.:)

Somewhere you mentioned that you would be excited to see Tony Romo coaching with Garrett when he retires, it may be in this thread. I agree with you 100%. As I was watching his presser today on DC.com, it did feel almost like I was watching a coach. I have often hoped over the years that when Tony retires he will be a coach, rather than a professional golfer, I think as a coach he would be great. Witten is another one. He has got to be a coach for us when he retires. But only for us. No one else.:p
