Now that we have Dan Quinn one of the engineers from the dominate Legion Of Boom Defensive patrol , what would it take for us to have our own version of the Legion of Boom Defense ?
what positions and elements are we still missing to eventually make our case for a Legion of Boom
Defense ?
Perfect, I love it. That's why I enjoyed the *idea* of the DT acquisitions last year. Two big ol' boys to come in, help clog the run and act as a bridge for the younger guys. Obviously the product fell flat, one got injured and never took a snap and the other floundered..but the thought was there. The biggest key to protecting your LBs is having big bodies in front of them to allow them to flow free to the action with less interference and traffic.
you have to have capable bodies to clog the middle, otherwise your LBs get stuck and hooked and mauled out of the pathway and they get battered and worn down.
If you've heard the old cliché , it all starts upfront in the trenches, ..that' saying still tends to stand firm on any team, any game.
And it wasn't just Nolan's crew that has been mauled - but even Marinelli's crew as well as we've seen most notably vs Colts reg season and Rams playoff game.
- And if you've seen Jaylon, he is not one for taking on blocks successfully. The less blocking interference he has to take on, the more it benefits him. He simply has to placed in
position where he can flow straight ahead with stopping to shed blocks.
- And the more physical tasks and pounding LVE has to take on., the more he is gonna wear down - and get hurt. I'm beginning to think (and expect) he's always gonna miss a number of games with injuries.
I agree....in 44 defensive players drafted since 2005, we have hit on one impact player in Lawrence and one very good player in Jones (left via FA). that's dismall record. and its not just lower rounds, its missing on 1st and 2nd rounders mostly, with the likes of Claiborne, Taco, etc.yes, you're right as I've always believed the nucleus core and bulk of your player personnel talent should come thru the NFL draft,.. and you're right also in that we have not invested enough defensively and
have come up short per draft when it comes to helping out our defense.
But the NFL draft is not the only way to acquire player talent. and we should not rely totally on that area to acquire talent.
Even in free agency - where we have failed miserably- per Stephen Jones we just don't go after big name stud vets, Stephen Gilmore, Tyranny Mathieu, Calasis Campbell, Logan Ryan,
we've missed a number of gem targets because we prefer the bargain based route.
-I'm afraid that this area will not change under Stephen Jones, and it puts vast more pressure on McClay to come up with hidden gem diamonds in the rough.
I don't mind a chance on cheap risk ala Aldon Smith, Gerald McCoy or Dontario Poe but I don't want to rely totally on them to get us over the hump.
- The other aspect is key trades - ala Robert Quinn, Amari Cooper, for what it's worth, i'm not one for trading the farm for a Jamal Adams. That's just me, but not for a guy that's
really a mini-LB and only makes biggest impression comes around the line of scrimmage. I strongly prefer a prime safety that affects the entire field vs just around the line.

RDE – Gregory
3 tech – Hill (Gallimore)
1 tech - ??
LDE – Dlaw
WLB - LVE
MLB – Jaylon
SLB - ??
LCB – Diggs
SS - Wilson
FS - ??
RCB - Brown
Quinn has to deliver us a strong run defense. Something even Marinelli nor Nolan were able to do .
And our greatest weakness is easily our interior DTs, .. I’m letting Hill vs Gallimore battle it out for 3 tech, while I acquire me a top notch 1 tech or two.
Something is gonna have to be done about Jaylon – I still see him as a liability in any scheme.
Will Quinn return Jaylon back to middle LB and move LVE back to OLB ?
I'm not for re-signing Aldon Smith to a big contract - who totally flamed out early and left a question about motor and effort
LOL the Legion of Boom was built with pot smoking losers who spent more time suspended than playing?Randy Gregory fits the mold
He didn't engineer anything. He took over Gus Bradley's defense. Bradley was a big name and got a HC job. Quinn simply road his coat tails like Switzer rode Jimmy's in the 90s. You are sadly mistaken if you think this clown is some mastermind. Did you see the crappy defenses in Atlanta? Yeah, get used to that here. He is a nobody unless he has stockpiled talent up and down the roster. We don't have one guy who could have started on that Seattle defense outside of maybe Lawrence. Many others could not even make their 2 deep.
yeah we need to draft or Sign a 2 Gap Plugger for the 1 Tech and a FS who has range and ball hawking skills, if my memory serves me correctly i believe his defense needed a BIG SDE ie someone to hold 2 Gaps on the strong side, so that would move DLaw to the LEO (rush) position and then you can move Gregory to SLB to rush the passer.
but yes we have some plugging to do weather its FA or DRAFT or both.
Can Seattle have a "Doomsday" defense?
McClay, Jerry, and Stephen saw first hand this season how badly this FO overrated their personnel on defense.
Better believe the biggest off-season priority is to surround Quinn with guys that can play ball.
