What are we going to do with Bell now, try and turn him into a 20 pound weight gain project and stay at LBer and become a slower but more physical safety?

First of all in no way did I ever understand Mazis weight loss. He was supposed to be our 1 tech.

Secondly, Quinn ran a hybrid of safety/lb, Zimmer won't be doing the same. We've got a log jam at the position and a need at LB. We are either shedding some of those guys or converting them.

He probably wouldn't make the team as a safety. There's a reason he wasn't drafted. He can cover in the short area but not in the back. Bell was 212 at the combine, the roster people look at is not correct. Remember they have Wilson, Hooker, Thomas, and Mukuamu at safety.


Jimmy used Bill Bates as a nickel LB, he couldn't cover well enough as a true safety.

Jimmy also signed James Washington, Ray Horton, traded for Thomas Everett, drafted Darren Woodson, Kenny Gant, and Brock Marion...so Bill Bates was never in the plan at S or to be more than Special teams. He was an off season workout leader, great Special Teams player (if the had a HOF special teams he would be on it) so Jimmy kept him to do just that, lead and play special teams.

Bell is a big S with 4.4 speed and needs to go back to S as he will wear out again at LB in the second half of the season. Also, because of off the field situation at Maryland (former 4 star recruit) he was not drafted and transferred to HBCU FAMU where the NFL has ignored players for several seasons until some former HBCU NFL alumni called the NFL out for ignoring HBCU players in the draft and Combine.
