Can we reduce the Shotgun formation?

No he invented both.. The Flex was an innovation to his original 4-3 scheme. He invented the 4-3 in the 50's as a player/DC with the Giants. He then added the wrinkle of the Flex when he took over the head coaching gig in Dallas.

I believe Coach Landry is credited with inventing the 4-3 defense not the zone defense but I know for a fact that Coach Landry himself stated that he "brought the shotgun back." He did not invent it. If you want footage go to Youtube and watch the 1946 NFL championship game between the Giants and the Bears.. The Bears with Sid Luckman were under center most of the game while the Giants were essentially a single wing team which featured the "tailback" in shotgun formation .. The Giants offense was basically snap the ball to the "tailback" and let him work.

Wilson & Cooper were the team’s two worst YAC receivers, & they’re both gone now. In their place are receivers who, at least in theory, will do a better job of stretching the field vertically, thus opening things up underneath for the likes of Lamb, Schultz, Pollard, & Elliott.

It would be interesting to see which routes they were more frequently targeted with. Only receiver that seemed to get deep throw targets was Lamb while everyone else sort went to the sticks in the modified Linehan offense.

Not bragging, but I think people get carried away. I think the main issue is failure to make adjustments on the part of KM. I think there are a lot of things he does that are good but he has to do a better job of countering what defense are doing. I do think weakness at Guard and Center has stymied the run game with guys penetrating the back field making contact with the RB in the back field killing running plays before they get started. I don't think KM is opposed to running the ball and did so early on but did not have a solution as the season progressed and defense were winning the battle up front. I do think Cowboys recognize the issue and have attempted to rectify it by getting Smith in the draft and putting him at guard.

He like other QB play the majority of snaps in shotgun. Claiming Dak can't take a snap from Center is a load of BS and there are enough clips of Dak lined up under Center and throwing the ball for TD. Like normal people come in and exaggerate and make false claims. There is a reason all QB lined up the majority of snaps in shotgun weather you want to admit it or not

Does anyone think that being in a more traditional formation would help a back like Zeke be more effective?

I felt they may have put Dak in the shotgun formation so much because it helps him see what's coming at him.

I'm not sure KM is willing to give this up, being the so called boy genius I'm sure he can cook up something. Maybe this is where Mike steps in and says hey if I'm going out, I'm going out using my plays etc. Please give your thoughts

The only reason QBs play mostly in shotgun now is the system. I could care less about Dak playing under center because I didn't bring that up to begin with. Make no mistake though. A great QB can play under center and excel as much as playing in the shotgun. Take Rodgers back anywhere in the history of the NFL and he is still elite. Modern football isn't superior to old school football.

Dak thrives in the hurry up, spread, shotgun formation. Thats whey they use it a lot.

My beef with the "shotgun" is when we're in that formation for say, 3rd and 1 or less. And the QB hands it to the RB who is already 2-3 yards behind the LOS, and has to go 3 yards to get 1 yard!! But, what the heck do I know.

Exactly, the RB has no running start in the shotgun. Someone like Zeke needs that momentum to be effective.

I been complaining about this since Moore took over play calling. Early in his career Zeke got something like 10-15% of his carries out of shotgun.. Over the last three years he's up at or near 50%. I think he might have even gone over 50% last season. It does not suit his running style in the least and it wastes his power and leverage that he brings from the deep back set. It's just a mis-use of talent and it chafes my britches.

  • Shotgun: 62%

Kansas City only played Under Center 23% of snaps.

The other reason we don't want to abandon the shotgun is because NFL pass rushers are getting faster and faster each year.

Look at Barno.

Guy could literally be a BEAST of a WR, one of the fastest, too, and he's play DE in the NFL because speed is the name of the game.

Shotgun gives you a little more safety cushion. That way, it's Dak Prescott, not Sack Prescott.
