Can We Talk About TJ Bass?

I guess it’s not impossible…but has he ever even played the position in a game? Don’t see any snaps for him there in college. I see the coaching staff has worked him at C some in practice, but thats a risky position to bank on someone with 0 experience.

Still mind boggling to me they seem hell bent on keeping 1st round pick Tyler Smith at LG despite showing he can play LT more than adequately as a rookie. Hopefully they change their mind if Tyron isn’t on the team next year.

He has only played OG and LT.

He is much better at OG. He gave up too many hurries and sacks at LT in college. His arms are shorter than Martin’s, which doesn’t help playing on the outside.

I just watched every offensive snap like 5x to watch each OL, and TJ Bass and Tyron were neck and neck for best lineman and the others weren’t even close.

TJ Bass is an NFL starter. Not a future starter. A starter. He gave up one bad play on a stunt where the DL CLEARLY grabbed him and held him from recovering.

He is quick, plays with sneaky leverage, and does an incredible job getting to the second level and sealing guys off. He’s also very disciplined. The only negative I see is that he can sometimes have trouble with quick (think Osa) DLs that try to flash around him, but he will get better with that as time goes.

I encourage everyone to watch the 1st qtr of the Commanders game and just watch how much better he is than Biadasz and Hoffman. He barely moves back on pass plays and executed on run plays beautifully.

Cannot wait to see this guy with an offseason in the weight room.
Indeed. From day 1 he has seemed to be a late round / RFA steal. Huge to grab productive players late in the draft.

Not be a wet blanket, but this was a bad game to base any judgement on Cowboys' OL. Didn't the Commodes get rid of their two best DEs earlier in the season? They just fired their HC (widely anticipated) and are clearly in super-rebuild mode, and it was a game that meant zero to them.

Let’s see him in playoff game. Washington isn’t exactly a stern test as they have traded away their starting DE’s and currently have scrubs occupying those spots.

Tyler was a serviceable tackle. He was an elite guard. I saw the Rams and the Eagles play Where is Waldo when Tyler was our left tackle.

I agree...they stole one with this guy.

Bass just looks like a 10 year vet out there.

Bass indeed played very well yesterday and he does have a bright future. But let’s tap the brakes a little on this guy being a stud. That was a below average Wash DL yesterday. Not saying we disregard his game. But he may not necessarily be starter quality yet. That remains to be seen.

It’s still great to know we have some depth and that we have a player that certainly shows the potential to be a starter next year.

You are right. The oline cry babies should check him out. Excellent rookie.

Nate Newton has liked this guy since TC (he also likes Asim Richards). I'm hoping the team has a plan for upgrading the center and moving Bass over might be an option,,, it still stings when I watch Buffalo run over people with Connor McGovern at center after we kicked him to the curb. Unbelievable.

Ideally Biadasz would get functionally stronger or better with technique/leveraging but it doesn't look like that's happening.
Asim Richards was my highest graded OL from preseason!!

That’s a fair point but Bass dealt largely with the DTs, on DEs on the handful of stunts

Nah. If Bass is a backup G on both sides next year, so be it. Tyler Smith is one of the best guards in football, you don't move him, you build around him.

Bass' real value, potentially, is in allowing Zack Martin to walk after 2024.
I could see Martin retiring very soon especially if we win the Super Bowl. He's accomplished everything except that at this point in his career.

How are you grading Mazie Smith without even knowing what the coaches want him to do on a play?
McCarthy said that Mazie Smith is doing a lot of the dirty work that goes unnoticed.
Many think mazi plays 1tech. When he plays alot of 3tech.
