Carimi Concerns

Carimi will be playing guard in the NFL in 3 years, Leonard Davis style. The days of being able to hide a slow footed tackle on the right side are coming to an end in the NFL. Too many teams employing the 3-4 with two speed rushing OLBs, too many teams flip flopping their best pass rusher around to exploit the best matchup, too many 4-3 teams now using undersized speed rushing DEs in exaggerated 9 techs like the Colts use Freeney and Mathis (and the way the Eagles will be using Cole and Graham next year under Washburn). There's no such thing as a prototype right or left tackle anymore. You either have a tackle who can block the likes of Brian Orakpo or Elvis Dumervil, or you have a guard.

This is all based on what? Have you actually taken a look at who teams have at RT?

I'll give you a hint, it's guys much closer to Carimi than Smith.

Lol, I know, I saw what you wrote that earlier in the thread and was just commenting that would be a great draft day haul. I should have just quoted it.

How would you feel if we traded down with NE and grabbed their 17 and 33 picks. First 3 picks as follows:

17- Carimi
33- Ijalana
40- Wisniewski

I know the 3rd OL pick might be seen as overkill and there would be some growing pains starting 3 rookies on the line, but we'd go from the oldest OL in the league to the youngest virtually overnight. Plus all of those guys are physically and mentally ready to play from day 1.

LT- Free
LG- Ijalana
C- Wisneiwski
RG- Gurode
RT- Carimi

We'd be able to cut Davis and Colombo, freeing up some cash, and could go after Secondary hard in FA.

Complete revamp the offensive line in a single draft. Damn I would be happy. With or without Tyron Smith. Our OL is ugly and I want it fixed.

That's why he is projected more as a RT.

The pass rushers who swing around the edge best because of their speed do give Carimi the most trouble.

Otherwise he is stout.

On the right side you're not dealing with the speed rush as much unless the opposition swings their best pass rusher.

That's when the offense has to adjust it's blocking, make a quick out to the left side or run right at the right side to bruise up the speed rusher throughout the game.

With the poor drafting of offensive linemen by this team, I believe in numbers. So yes, I would be completely fine with taking three OL with the first three picks. I would hope for the best, but if we hit on just two of the three I'd chalk it up as a win.

You do know that they had Carimi taking snaps at guard in Senior Bowl practices, right? Who's idea do you think that was? I'm going to guess it was the NFL coaches who were scouting him and evaluating his future, and not Carimi's who believes he's supposedly the best left tackle in the draft (especially when he'll make a lot more money as a tackle than he ever will as a guard).

Carimi has zero margin for error when it comes to foot speed as a tackle. He barely has enough foot speed to handle it at 22 years old with no NFL mileage on the tires. By the time he's 25-26 and suffered a few lower leg injuries, he'll be moved inside to guard.

You didn't really answer my question. How many RT's around the league known for their "footspeed"?

Costanza also worked out as guard. I would guess it's about versatility rather than lack of athleticism.

Pretty sure it was because they didn't have enough guards at the senior bowl

Whether they're herladed for their "footspeed" by TV announcers is irrelevant. The bottomline is they have to have it, because because elite speed rushers line up everywhere in today's NFL. When you face the Colts, you're going to face Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis. When you face the Steelers you're going to face Lamar Woodley and Jerome Harrison. Even if a team just has one elite speed rusher, they're going to move them all over the field to exploit the best matchup. There's no where to hide a slow tackle in today's NFL. It's amazing how much fans really can't seem to let go of these antiquate archetypes of positions that have been outdated for years.

Every Tackle in the NFL has trouble with Elite speed rushers, just because he'll have trouble with Dwight Freeney doesn't mean he can't be a good Tackle. That's like saying an NBA prospect won't make it in the league because he'll have trouble guarding Kobe Bryant.

Of course it is.

I didn't say anything about "TV Announcers" btw.

Where did you hear that they tried him at LT and that he failed?

He played two games at LT early in the season....or so I have read. It didn't take and they moved him back.

Just out of curiosity who was the starting LT for USC this past season? Is he a senior? If u always put your premier tackle on the left side, as has been duly stated, then why didn't USC play smith there? Not trying to be a ******** just asking? Could he not beat this cat out? We're supposed to draft a LT AT 9 that can't even start at LT own his own college team? I'm being serious. What's the deal?

He was the #1 offensive tackle recruit in the country coming out of high school. He came to USC as a freshman he was behind incumbant starter Charles Brown, who was a 2nd round pick in last year's draft. USC moved Smith to right tackle to get him on the field as a sophomore. He stayed at right tackle last year as a 19 year old junior where he was first team all Pac-10 and worn the Morris Trophy for the best offensive lineman in the conference, as voted on by the Pac 10 football coaches. He declared for the draft early, and just turned 20 in December.

Matt Kalil started at LT for USC, he's a Sophmore. Better player than Smith, but he's also a legit top 5 pick whenever he decides to declare.
