That's probably the difference in our positions, then. Carr's a legitimate starter in my book. There's no way I'd consider replacing him in the lineup with a rookie 4th round pick. I'd definitely make him take the pay cut, though.

If I did add a rookie CB that I was comfortable with, and if I could find a vet CB to add to the mix, I would cut him if he didn't take the pay cut. I just don't see any way he doesn't cut his salary down to at least what he considers a small premium over current market rate for a player of his age and ability. We might disagree on what that number is, too, but it's going to be a lot lower than his current number, no matter what.

The problem is that there are no starting corners just sitting around waiting for a phone call........all the good corners have pretty much been signed by now in free agency. That is why Carr has all the leverage right now, he knows there is nobody left in free agency that is going to be better than him for what the Cowboys are wanting to pay.

And as far as "making him take a pay cut"........the NFL does not work like that, you cant just make players do something. Why do you think so many players are released because of pay? They even refer to them as "cap casualties" in the media. That is because there is an unwritten rule in the NFL that as a player, you do not take a pay cut in your own lockerroom. It is perfectly acceptable to get released due to pay and then sign somewhere else for less, but very few players take a pay cut to stay on their own team.

At this point, I think the team just lets him play out the last year of his deal as is. Besides, we have plenty of cap for our draft picks and there are really no free agents left worth a big price tag, so what do we really need the extra cap for.

Carr's options:

1. Calls Cowboys bluff, still collects 2016 base salary of $9,100,000 spread out over 17 weeks.
2. Refuses paycut, gets released. Receives 0 additional dollars from Cowboys, but signs contract with new team which equals more guaranteed money with signing bonus.
3. Takes paycut, loses money.

Carr has the leverage Fanboys.

That is not leverage. Those are just outcomes.

DAL is under no obligation to pay him another dollar and they can cut him Aug 31th.

Is that a good outcome for Carr, scrambling for a job the week the season opens?

Carr will find another team when cut, will we find another starting CB?

Leverage.

You think we don't get FA now? That might be the most unprofessional move you could possibly make. It'd make your FO look like spiteful ex wives instead of professionals.

Void a contract that you offered, and instead of accepting the fact you couldn't come to terms, you act like a child and cut him right as the league year begins. Every player in the league would take notice of that. That's not leverage, that's just being a butthole.

I think Carr's agent is willing to risk us not trashing our brand. And time favors Carr not us, because there's limited supply. If there was unlimited supply, it'd favor us but there isn't.

Why? Unless we get one of the top corners in the draft, we'd get significantly worse at CB. Carr isn't great, but he's a vet and a pro. His agent knows there aren't any players in FA left that can play, and he knows Dallas doesn't want to risk starting a rookie at CB this year because there's still a "Romo window".

His agent sees a team in a bind at CB, with no real veteran options left, and who will desperately need a starting CB if Carr is gone. The entire league also knows Mo gets banged up, further giving us need at the position.

His agent also knows CB is a "need" position in the NFL, and he can still probably get a nice contract after the draft when a team "needs" a CB because the draft didn't fall the way they wanted.

He doesn't really need us, but at this point we need him. Thats leverage. We really don't have much leverage at all unless we want to trash our brand.

You don't do things like that bro, cut a player right before the season starts............that is a total D-bag move and your reputation around the league would be crap with potential free agents next year.

Excellent analysis....................don't see why others on here cant understand this.............we have virtually no leverage here, NONE

There are still veteran CBs out there who can give you coverage if you team them up with a rookie. And there's still the draft.

When I say 'make him take a pay cut' I'm obviously referring to the threat of releasing him. Players adjust their contracts with their teams regularly to get more guaranteed money. That's not unusual.

The overwhelmingly best outcome for both sides is for him to rework his deal at market rate and to get more guaranteed money. The alternative is to get replaced by a draft pick and whatever veteran CB we like that shakes loose from another team's roster and to try to catch on on another team where he won't walk in the starter, will likely get paid less, and won't have the large guarantees.

I think you're mistaking board and media narrative as opposed to what the actual decisionmaking was.

Marinelli prefers whatever his secondary coach is running it seems. We ran a man-robber scheme last year. Henderson was the pass defense coordinator but was replaced by Eberflus. I'm interested to see what happens this year. You could be right that we go back to more zone or entirely back to the cover 3 scheme we had. Could be something completely different. Sure seems like Eberflus is being groomed.

Yeah I know Marinelli has been flexible but when he was successful as a DC in CHI he ran a lot of zone looks. If anything, he's proven he'll work with what he has, etc. Golden cock must have been a blackmail thing or something:D

They won't be vindictive, but he probably would end up a June 1 cut. He'd end up with less guaranteed money almost certainly. There aren't going to be teams out there with open starting jobs at that point. He'd be an upgrade at the position on several rosters, but not a walk on starter, probably.

His best option, if we want him to cut salary, is to pocket the guarantee and stay in Dallas.

That's just completely untrue. He's an older CB on a hugely overplayed contract that costs us less to jettison than it does to keep. We need to draft a young CB no matter what, and have regular starters in Scandrick and Mo already on the roster. And there are vets like Leon Hall sitting in FA who'd almost certainly sign for half of what we're paying Carr right now.

I think at times to his own detriment though. He'll work with what the FO gives him that's for sure and will alternate schemes or coverages to hide deficiencies, etc. At times I would prefer he dial up a few blitzes but also understand why he's hesitant to do so given how weak the O was last year and really not what he's "about". But he isn't incapable of creating blitz packages if he needs to, etc. but would rather rely on the front four and zone schemes for TOs; similar to Seattle.

You guys really need a dictionary. Leverage means he calls the shots. Dez had leverage. Romo has leverage. Carr is at the whim of the FO. If he gets cut he loses a lot of money. He was the 80th ranked CB and has no INTs the last 2 years.

The other is just business and it happens every year on every team. Good guys get cut for monetary reasons after Training Camp all the time.

We don't need him, we barely want him. We have 6 other CBs and haven't even drafted yet.

Carr and his agent are betting that Dallas is not going to start a rookie at CB and no vets are left that are 16 game starters, most are rotational types.

Looks like an old fashion stare down contest.:D

Even if they don't sign anybody else, they won't have to start a rookie. Scandrick, Mo, and they've got Jones who can play in spots and rotate in another S. And we're going to be bringing in rookie DBs, because this is the season to do with with Mo and the Safeties all nearing FA.

I also thing the tone of Carr's comments this week suggested to me that he might be open to a cut. When asked about it, he said

“You know I don’t like to talk about those things...I’ll let that side, that situation handle itself outside the media. What I will tell you is that I just love being a Cowboy; I love being in Dallas and the community. I look forward to playing another year.”

We'll see how it plays out, as you suggest. Carr's a good enough player that he attracts a decent salary, no matter what we do. But he's overpaid, and it's obvious. The reasonable thing to do is make an adjustment to just above market rate and lock in some additional security.

I have no problem with Carr the player. The contract was a disaster the day he signed though. Although drafting a Carr in the 5th/6th round like KC did and then having play out his rookie contract is an excellent move. It was just a sucker signing to give him that big contract when he hit free agency. I would love to find a player like Carr/Scandrick in the 5th or 6th round in a draft.
