Carry over from the Parcells Era

Eh, if they don't "earn" it, then it will be taken away from them. Not really sure the message they're trying to send is all that profound. Of course they wouldn't have "earned" it before the preseason games, but they'll have one on their helmet then. And let's not kid ourselves that the first round pick really has to "earn" it. They'll be getting their star. That they have to wait a few months to get it means nothing IMO. Do FA's who haven't played for the boys have to "earn" it too? Didn't think so.

Is anyone else happy to see the rooks without stars on their helmets. I am glad that carried over from Parcells.

I don't really like it. It is a huge life moment for many players that will never again be on an NFL team. Getting to wear the star for a few days would be a big deal to them and not wearing it really isn't doing much to help the team, IMO.

I prefer the Parcells deal where the 1st round pick has to bring him water. I like the tradition of rookie carrying the other players shoulder pads and that type of thing.

It is the early round draft picks that need to stay grounded, not the guys desperately trying to make the team or practice squad. I think of the story with the Safety that was recently cut by the Texans and they claim he refused to play special teams. That player came to the Texans when Wade Phillips was the DC and interim Head Coach. If he had been a rookie under Jimmy or Parcells he would never have considered complaining about playing special teams. Jimmy would have had him running sprints on the Asthma Field until he passed out if he had any resistance to anything.

The new guys haven't proven themselves to the Cowboys yet. Look, it just reeks of screwing with the "kids" and it's not cool. Hazing is not a good thing. Immediately letting someone know they are a supported, welcome member of a community or family is much more beneficial.

I don't see it as hazing. Guys are getting a chance that is all. Until you make the roster you are not a Dallas Cowboy that is what you earn. No give me, no hand outs you want it go get it be it a undrafted player or a drafted player.

Again, the same thing should apply to Rivers or Gachkar, then. I guess I am just "that guy". I was "that guy" in the Marine Corps, I was "that guy" in the army, and I've always been "that guy" no matter where I have worked. I am the guy saying "hey, this is BS. This isn't fair" or "this doesn't make any sense". People don't like it when you challenge their beliefs but I love challenging them when it is warranted.

That is how you feel. BP and Garrett seem to see it differently. Myself I don't mind it at all until the roster is cut to 53 you have to earn it. Star is not a given you want it then you work hard and get it. That is how I see it. As for it applying to Rivers or Gachkar it would not bother me at all if they too came out with no star. However there is a difference in that they are NFL players while these young men are hoping to become NFL players some will and some won't

I think it's great. It's all about accountability. Nothings given to you, you must go out and earn it. And when you do, it gives you a great boost of confidence, accomplishment and helps you buy into the system.

As Marine Corps vet there's many things that don't seem to make any sense. But when you understand the underlying meaning that it's all about being a Marine and all that entails it makes total sense. Some folks aren't able to see the big picture.

Well good thread guys. See y'all back in the "AP to Dallas" thread. #roadto1000pages

I thought it was going to be about...if / when AP gets here, does he too have to earn his star...or does he get one right away...LOL

Actually I don't care either way about the star deal, but it should pertain to every player, every one starts out even...all must earn the star....all or none...

Riiiiight. So it's like being jumped into a gang. The whole gang whips your *** and then says "Ok, you're cool enough to be in our club."

Gotcha.

I guess you had a different experience than what I had. That's cool.

I like this but I'm not gonna "Like" it because I liked your post right before this post which I "Liked". You have too many likes.

:)

I went ahead and liked your post so that I now look like the much bigger person.

Don't you dare like this one just to try to even things up.

I *said*, don't you dare like this one just to try to even things up, Seven.

Bully.............

Even if the star isn't motivating rookies to try harder, it has value as an acknowledgment that they have.

The "star has value" is such an awesome statement. It's the singular symbol on my car that people immediately recognize and know who and what I stand for. And when I see others on the highways and byways with the same symbol, I get that unspoken connection that's indescribable.

I'm just glad there was no "carry over" of offensive lineman Parcells drafted. He had to be the worst talent evaluator of offensive lineman in Cowboy history. He failed on just about every guy he drafted.

I like it. There are very few out there playing that is ultimately guaranteed a roster spot. So without the star the coaching staff is pretty much saying you are here to earn that star!! The only way you ever get that star is to fight for it
