Rites of passage have a psychological effect on people. It provides a sense of belonging and identity. For a bubble guy fighting for a roster spot without a star to earn one provides a symbol for the experience. The effect can be profound.

I agree
I love it. Shows you are here to earn something not just be given something
Those little mind games I think do help build a "team" atmosphere

Call it "tradition" call it hazing. I think that JG does it with a psychological intent, if you fight to get the star you fight to keep and fight for it. I think it is more team pride thing. Similar to pep rallies, spirit sticks and other pride things. To some guys it doesn't mean anything but to others it might I think it is one of the avenues coaches use to motivate people realizing motivation can be something different to each person.

Is anyone else happy to see the rooks without stars on their helmets. I am glad that carried over from Parcells.

Garrett is the ultimate carryover from that era. Jerry wanted JG here under Parcels to learn and take the job in a few years. Jerry sensed some clear matches there.

I recall one if the reporters wrote about how Jerry would pursue Garrett for the staff well before BP retired
