9. Anthony Spencer, DE, Dallas Cowboys: Greg Ellis, who holds the spot Spencer wants, isn't happy because Spencer received first-team reps during offseason work. Ellis should worry about his job. Spencer has the explosive speed off the edge that will be hard to keep on the bench. He will be a long-time companion for DeMarcus Ware.

Seems like every year, lately, is going to be the year Ellis losses his job and every year he is putting up better and better numbers. Ellis is a beast right now and Spencer will not be able to beat him out.

Don't think of it as Spencer is getting so and so. Think of it that they are spending X + Y to keep Ellis and Spencer on the field. It doesn't matter who is starting, they are still spening X + Y. Barring injury, Ellis is not getting beat out.

That's really great that you think that, but it doesn't make you any more right than the author of this little piece. If Spencer would be better to have on the field, he will be on the field. Me personally, I don't see him becoming a better player than Ellis just yet, because Ellis is a very good technician, but Ellis is also very horrible at everything except pass rushing, so if Spencer steps up his pass rush game as well as show that he can defend the pass and play the run better than Ellis, then he will certainly be getting more snaps.

I certainly hope he steps up, because Ellis is just getting older and crabbier year after year.

If spencer is ready to start do it. Ellis could extend his career as a pass rushing specialist. Spencer is a beast and I'm not sure how much longer ellis is going to be able to stay ahead of him. If spencer is better in pass coverage than ellis pull the trigger now. Prossman

Spencer is a great top 10 pick for breakout player.

He's in the right scheme to make big attention grabbing plays and the opposition won't be able to focus on neutralizing Spencer - what with Ware et. al. on the field.

With the roids of course:D ! He has the size , great speed rushing the passer, and is flat out Nasty. If we can get Tank and ratliff to collapse the pocket our sack total will skyrocket. I am excited about this season.Prossman

Ellis is not and has never been a beast. He has one double digit sack year in a decade. It's evident that while he adds a lot to the D, he's more a beneficiary of the good players around him than a "beast". He's a good, solid player, nothing more.

I'd say we'll see Ellis' playing time reduced if for no other reason than to preserve his body. By season's end, I'd bet that Ellis and Spencer are getting close to equal time.

I can understand that PoV because he took so long to get to beast like status ;) But since being moved to LB in the 3-4, he has flourished. Name a bad season he has had. Trust me.. you spell Ellis with a capitol B :D

My question is was Ellis used as a pass rushser only, while Ware pulled both rushing and coverage? I think ware said that was the way it worked the majority of the time , but i could be mistaken. If Spencer can pull both duties like Ware does, He would allow us to disguise what we are doing verses starting Ellis. Regardless, we are sitting pretty. With our CB upgrades we could easily increase our overall sack numbers by 10 over last year. Prossman

With a little less wear and tear, it should extend Ellis career..........be nice to keep that cheap 10 sack salary level around.......

Ellis is a total liability in pass coverage. He'd be far more effective as a situational pass rusher. He's also getting along in years. We have a younger, more talented player behind him. It's inevitable that Spencer will be taking his spot more and more as the next two years unfold.

IMO Ellis should be moved back to DE. It's time to let Spencer do his thing.

Wow... more and more over the next two years? That is pretty drastic considering Spencer is a first rd draft pick drafted to replace him.

I'll give you in two years. In two years Spencer will replace him. Now, Ellis will not let him beat him. He is a beast! Championship!!

I would rather start Spencer and use Ellis sparingly so that he doesn't wear himself out and is still fresh for the post season where we really need his presence. It does us no good for him to get 15 sacks in the regular season and none in the post season.

If the coaches start the best player, I expect Spencer to replace Ellis fairly quick. But if they want to keep Ellis happy they will likely keep him as the starter and give him plenty of breathers during the game. With a lot of "Cowboy" looks to get all three on the field.

I said it last year. if Spencer gets stronger he's going to be scary. one full offseason of conditioning and training, that's all that guy needs.

I wonder why we didn't do that more last season? I could be wrong, but I don't remember seeing that until the Greenbay game...or maybe it was against the Patriots. I do know that we were able to generate some pressure with it.

Could someone with that info (Adam) let us know how many times it was used last season?
