Where is this "explosiveness" I hear attached to Spencer. I hate to say it...but he looked average most of the time. Now granted it was his first year....but I watched him alot because I was huge fan of that draft pick...but all I saw was just another guy.

I disagree. Spencer is that quick. Not Ware quick but he is very quick and fast.

Wood made the point I was making earlier. I didn't see the quick twich or explosiveness out of Spencer. Now we can hope that he gets to the point to where he doesn't think so much and he can just go, which could be the case. But explosiveness off the snap wasn't something I saw from him at all.

I am hoping that he becomes much better in coverage than Ellis, since he is being groomed from the beginning to do it. We need Spencer to be real good in coverage in order to be able to bring Ware even more than we already do on the blitz.

I don't really think he got much of an opportunity to just rush. He was clearly thinking an awful lot in a system completely new to him and any player will tell you that's going to limit how explosive they appear. Still, he started and hardly embarassed himself.

I don't think that is the idea. You don't take two college DEs and try to make one of them a coverage specialist and rush the other more. What we are undoubtedly after is what Phillips had in San Diego. Either Merriman or Shaun Phillips would rush at any given time. The thing that works for us is that Ware is ten times better in coverage than Merriman and we just need Spencer to sharpen up to Ellis' level of mediocrity to make it work.

I wasn't saying one should be a coverage specialist, I want us to be able to rush them equally so that it is unpredictable where the rush is coming from. Right now, you would much rather keep Ellis out of coverage if possible, and hopefully Spencer can change that.

I was just was saying that I want him better in coverage than Ellis, which shouldn't be hard and he probably already is better at it. Thinking too much can take away your aggressiveness, hopefully that is what I was seeing.

maybe because he played alongside defensive line nobodies such as Ebenezer Ekuban, Kenyon Coleman, Marcus Wiley, Willie Blade, Michale Myers for the most of his career until Ware came around to take pressure off him.

He had two years with Ware with Parcells and still produced below ten sacks the year he had Ware alongside him for a full season. The next year, he started off quick like usual, but faded if I remember.

Remember, a player like Wiley had his best years when he was under Wade. Maybe it is Wade that makes players look better than they really are.
