Clearly they weren't pleased with something after a few weeks of OTAs. They decided to move on...

I am not sure why people are dismayed. The team gets criticized far too often for holding on to sucky players. Be glad they identified it and moved on quickly instead of wasting time and a camp spot. Remember, this isn't the first time they evaluated him.

I guess the dismay stems from the fact he was being talked up by the team mouthpieces just a few days ago and now he's on the street.

Don't know about you, but to see the team say one thing and do another is not exactly kosher.

Unless there is some mysterious off-the-field thing going on, they look pretty asinine talking up a player who was about to be cut.

A CB takes some reps at S, the team gets asked about it, answers. A few days later they release him. It doesn't necessarily mean they think the guy's garbage. Bottom roster players are just trying to stick around long enough to benefit enough from coaching that they make a roster. That any one of them is here today, gone tomorrow shouldn't surprise anybody. Neither should the team saying good things about somebody who's right on the border of good enough to make a final 53.

Fans think guys who can't make a team or who can't start are garbage. Coaches and players for the most part understand that even these bottom roster guys are among the best athletes in the world at what they're trying to do. They're just trying to do something very very difficult. You can respect a guys ability, say nice things about him, and still let him go if the numbers don't work out.

Said it in the other thread. Kiss of death when players start being switched to different positions.

Yep. I only remember it working out for Mark Tuinei.

Wasn't Todd Christianson originally a fullback?

I'm pretty sure it's called professional courtesy. So he can maybe catch on with another team at some point. I don't hear many teams trashing players, or not talking about their positive attributes

True. But I learned my lesson from taking those comments seriously last year. Remember Patmon was supposed to be Scandrick like. Garrett never talks bad publicly about players. It's always "He's done some good things, and he needs to continue to grow"
Heck, it would probably be better to ask for Jerry's opinion on players.

They haven't even seen him in pads yet. This is perplexing.

You cannot tell so much about tackling until the preseason games. You can tell if a guy can accelerate, run with speed and track receivers without pads though. Press technique is different without the shells obviously but in the slot it doesn't matter all that much.

You can also tell if he is failing in the classroom, not understanding assignments and coverages, attitude problems, etc.

Well damn, hopefully they have a plan of who they want behind our 3 current CBs and they better get on it fast. Then again, it's not as though it'll be hard to replace who we let go. I've kinda wanted some actual veteran depth anyways, so hopefully they go that route.
