I think an Akin Ayodele comparison would be a pretty sweet deal for a 4th rounder. He's a solid starter, he continues to get work, does his job even if he isn't making huge plays he also isn't making really terrible plays....

Would we really hate that if that's what Butler turns out to be? Not everyone can be James Harrison, because not everyone can take steroids.

In 3-4 scheme, Akin was a failure. He didn't make huge glaring mistakes like being out of place, but he failed to make plays and had issues getting to the ball at times. He is far better suited for a 4-3 linebacker. I'm surprised that the Dolphins signed him. I'm guessing they did it because he doesn't make mistakes and they wanted a place holder until they drafted his replacement.

I don't know what they guy is going to turn out to be. I'm excited about watching his progress though. I hope he plays mistake free football. As for your Harrison comment, you should have just said "Most people can't be the Pittsburgh Steriod Users" :laugh2:

in what way? this kid is sooooooooooooo slow.

if you look at the 2's combine measurables, they are eerily familiar

plus both are high energy players

I hope he proves me wrong cause I think he's gonna be nothing for this team. he's so slow even in his highlight videos.

I agree. He doesn't stand out, even in his own highlights. He does have some burst to close, but his best asset is his long arms.

doesn't look that slow to me

look at how this guy attacks the QB, looks like a turnover waiting to transpire
Brandon Williams is supposed to be another 4.7 guy, like Butler, but compare their bursts off the snap. The difference is very apparent. Like I said in another thread, Butler is more physical and he has long arms so those will help him, but he should not beat out Spencer. Spencer is more talented, more explosive, more physical. Butler probably has the edge only in heart. But BWill has the physical ability to replace Spencer on day. His burst of the line and closing on ball carriers is obvious, and he has the frame to get bigger.

those are draft videos filmed from field level. everyone of those videos makes all of them look like they're the fastest players ever.

Im with you on that I can't see what they like based on these films but of course they do have more film than we do.

Just by his body structure you would think he is good vs the run and in his highlights he looked like he was getting more of his sacks off of cleaning up other peoples pressures.

Maybe he can do that with Demarcus.

He'll be an interesting guy to watch but imo he is nothing more than depth and a project this year.

He'll be Spencers backup after Greg leaves unless we draft or sign someone to replace him.

All of these guys wont make the team obviously so it wouldn't shock me if we dont keep him.

I'm not saying that video makes Butler look fast, but the dude racked up 22.5 sacks, so it's not like many of his targets ran away from him, and if you read his scouting report, his speed, initial and closing burst are all described as being good

yeah, it's pretty obvious that BWill is the more ascending player, and has a higher ceiling, but he's more of a project than Butler, which is why Butler was taken beforehand

Yeah, I was shocked when they took him before Brandon Williams, but it appears that may have been inadvertant, they handed in the cards for both picks together, it could just have easily been Williams being picked first I think. In either case, the Cowboys were obviously high on both picks to not even wait to see who else fell before making their choices.

I sure hope not, because Akin flat out sucked here. He got smoked in coverage all the time, looking confused in zone, and he never made plays behind the line.

From what I read, Strong-Butler worked out well in linebacker drills, and Brandon Williams did well in those drills when worked out by the Cowboys coaches.

I think that had more to do with Dallas taking them over those other players than anything else.

Not every defensive end or even 3-4 linebacker in college is cut out to be a 3-4 OLB in the pros.

Sweet. At least we know when it is all said and down that the team will be able to package him up in a trade for a bag of peanuts.

Watching his highlights, he reminds me of former Cowboy Akin Ayodele, who also played DE in college but then moved to a 3-4 inside LB here and now with the Miami Dolphins.

I'd be surprised if Bill Jones actually remembers Akin Ayodele at Purdue.

I liked Reed a lot, too.

Maybe for some reason they thought Butler could transition to a 34 OLB better than him, though. Didn't Butler start out as a WR or something?

Butler is still the guy I worry the most won't make it, but we'll see.

I think that is the key exactly.
Butler played strong safety before DE and can handle being in space. We like a guy on the field who can drop into zone coverage and we sure don't want it to be Ware very often. Greg Ellis looks awful doing it and Spencer struggles there with technique.

I don't know enough about Butler to judge to be honest but his attributes match those of an OLB with a solid coverage game.

40 times do not show you if a guy has the hips to come up and make open-field tackles.
