The Talk About Garrett

Posted by CBS11

Cowboys assistant head coach and offensive coordinator Jason Garrett came very close to getting the head coaching position with the St. Louis Rams -- contrary to what you may have read or heard.

There were even columns written that Garrett did not get the job because he had trouble relating to black players. Not true.

In a conversation with CBS 11 Sports Director Babe Laufenberg, St. Louis Rams General Manager billy Devaney said: “Jason was a serious, serious candidate that we all felt strongly about. No doubt, he will be a terrific head coach in this league for a long, long time when given the opporutunity. I was in the interview process last season in Atlanta, and even with the difficult times in Dallas this year, my opinion of him did not change

uh oh. I'm sure that a certain member of the GROJG cause will read this and surely ask, "What the heck are you talking about Willis???"

Oh you missed that? There are two huge threads about it. One in this forum, the other in the Daily Zone.

Article by John Czarnecki.

JFE's article yesterday was about it.

The reason he didn't get it was that at a young coach his offense declined with more talent, and so did Romo.

Spagnolo's defense was consistent for two years straight.

I'm also convinced that they were not sure on him coaching Bulger on account that he couldn't reel in Romo.

Wow...so does this mean that that John Czarnecki Fox Sports article from a few days ago about how Owens "flexed his muscle" and kept Garrett from the job in St. Louis is untrue??? *gasp*

Feels good knowing I was right...

If you look at them both on an equal basis, then you have to pick Spagnuolo over Garrett right now based on the play of their units.

You can sell Spagnuolo to your fan base because of how his defense played, but you can't do the same with Garrett this year.

I don't know how Devaney had the two rated, but if it was close at all then you go with the one who you know the fans will get behind.

Just not quite serious enough to hire him though, huh?

Be glad you did, this idiot writer basically said TO spread the rumor that Garrett was a racist. He quoted no source, provided no evidence.

Worst hit piece in a while but since it was against TO, it got some favorable reviews.

thats not true, but whatever you want to think I guess is ok

and Spags defense had a great run at the end of last yr and the start of this yr...it wasnt two yrs of game in and game out consistency

I didn't see those articles about him and black players but I wouldn't have bought that anyway. At any rate I can understand why they went with Spags instead of Garrett in this case, based on the back to back years of play by the two guys units but it's just words, in all honesty, when this St. Louis owner says this guy was a serious canidate and will be a good head coach for a long, long time. As someone said before actions speak louder than words and in this case apparently they didn't think he was as good as he believes he'll be.

So if that was the case, why didn't you want him? So you don't want a coach who you believe would be great, for a long, long time when given the oppurtunity?

all of it
stats show that what he said about Garrett and our offense is true. stats also show that what he said about spags and the giants defense is true.

This seems to reinforce the earlier story that Spags and Garrett were essentially tied for the job and they simply chose to go defense.
