I'll start off by saying I know absolutely nothing about these college kids that got drafted but if CeeDee Lamb is supposed to be the end-all, be all of this WR class and a can't miss prospect, then why was he only the 3rd receiver taken in the first round? I've seen others ask this but not seen any real explanation. Why did Ruggs and Jeudy go before him?
That's a good question and I know a lot about all 3 being a college football hound and specifically the SEC and Big 12.
Ruggs went 1st because the Raiders took the 1st WR and they play in the AFC W and he's the closest thing to Tyreek Hill in this draft. DEN and LV both decided to fight fire with fire instead of trying to put it out.
Jeudy and Lamb were basically interchangeable as the 2 best #1WR's in this class and Jeudy plays in the SEC and Lamb in the Big 12, not noted for great D's; however, since they are the passing conference they do have some very good DB's and Lamb was THE weapon for OU, Bama had more than Jeudy. There is also that tie breaker with all of the WR's coming out of Bama like Jones, Cooper and Ridley and the SEC just puts out more skill position players higher in the draft. SEC picks are sexier.
Lamb was bouncing from 1 to 2 to 3 and back again all though the mock drafts and when Ruggs turned in that 40 at the Combine, he bounced up on a lot of boards and he's run faster than that. He was no worse than the #2 WR on every board.
If I'd needed a WR and had first shot at one, Lamb would be my guy because I watched OU a lot and when he was in, they were a different offense, Hurts was a different QB. And the DC's all know who Riley wanted to get the ball to and in the playoffs, they tried to shut him down and doubled him and he was still getting open, Hurts was just not getting the ball to him but he did catch 4 for an average of 30 per catch.
The Cowboys actually took BPA and had some teams going need ahead of them or he wouldn't have been there. And I don't think Booger wasn't thinking about the fact that PHL had let it leak that he was their 1st choice as a pick and that was based on need. If Jeudy had been there, don't know if they don't take Chaisson but getting some payback when they took Goedert when they had Ertz and knowing they really wanted Lamb, that was just extra special.
But the main reason those 2 went before Lamb is that Booger didn't pick higher or he would have most likely come off earlier and ahead of Jeudy and Ruggs. It is a wealth of riches because the Cowboys already had a top 5 WR tandem, now they have the top WR trio. Does that make them a better offense? Dunno, they were already a top O and he could just repeat what Cobb did and not open up the pass game anymore than it was, Prescott was the 2nd passer in stats.
The best part of this pick for me is the future. With what they're paying Cooper, no way they keep Gallup who will want #1 money. Lamb gives them an affordable #2 and maybe the future #1WR.
